Encanto

Encanto is that rare modern Disney film that actually earns its emotional payoff. Set in a magical Colombian valley, it tells the story of Mirabel Madrigal, the one family member without a supernatural gift, who must figure out why the family's magic is fading. The answer turns out to be profoundly traditional: the family is cracking under the weight of a matriarch's unprocessed trauma and impossible expectations. Abuela Alma lost her husband to violence, received a miracle, and has spent 50 years terrified of losing it. She pushes her children and grandchildren to perform, to serve, to be perfect - and that pressure is literally destroying the house.

The film's thesis is unmistakably conservative in its bones: family is everything, but family requires honesty, forgiveness, and the willingness to see each other as people rather than functions. The miracle doesn't come from rejecting the family structure - it comes from healing it. Mirabel doesn't tear down the system. She confronts the wounds that were poisoning it.

Lin-Manuel Miranda's songs are the engine here, and they're spectacular. 'We Don't Talk About Bruno' became a genuine cultural phenomenon, topping the Billboard Hot 100. 'Surface Pressure' articulates the burden of being the 'strong one' in the family in a way that resonates across demographics. The Colombian cultural detail is rich and authentic - the result of extensive consultation with Colombian artists and advisors.

The progressive elements are present but mostly organic: the Colombian setting naturally produces a diverse-looking family, body-positive Luisa is a character whose appeal comes from relatability rather than ideology, and the film's themes of challenging authority are directed at healing generational trauma within the family rather than tearing down external structures. There's some mild anti-authority messaging in how Mirabel pushes back against Abuela, but the resolution vindicates both of them.

Encanto is not trying to change your politics. It's trying to make you call your grandmother. For conservative families, that's about as safe as modern Disney gets.
