Every Comedy Movie Ranked by Woke Score (2024)

Every comedy film from 2023-2024 ranked from most woke to most traditional using VirtueVigil scores. Barbie, Mean Girls, Beetlejuice, and more -- all scored, all ranked.

Comedy has always been the genre Hollywood uses to smuggle ideology past its guard. You laugh, your defenses drop, and by the time the film ends you have absorbed a worldview without realizing it. This is not a conspiracy theory. It is how satire works, and it is why comedy is worth watching closely.

VirtueVigil reviewed every major comedy release from 2023 and 2024 using the Woke-Watch Scoring System. The Woke Score measures the density and intensity of progressive ideological content. The Traditional Score measures traditional values content. The ranking below runs from most woke (highest Woke Score minus Traditional Score) to most traditional. Every film has a full review linked so you can read the complete analysis.

The results may surprise you. Not every film in the comedy category is a progressive manifesto. Several of the most entertaining comedies of recent years score surprisingly traditional. The data does not lie. This is the full picture of where comedy stood in 2023 and 2024, ranked by the numbers.

    Barbie (2023)

STRONGLY WOKE WOKE: 48 TRAD: 16 NET: -32 WOKE

    Genre: Comedy/Fantasy • Platform: Theatrical • Year: 2023

The highest woke score of any comedy in this ranking, and it earned every point. Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach made a $1.44 billion feminist manifesto wrapped in pink packaging, and the marketing was so effective that audiences paid to see it before they understood what they were buying. Barbie is a sustained critique of patriarchy, masculine authority, and the idea that men and women might have complementary rather than competing roles. The comedy is genuinely funny -- Gosling's Ken is a highlight -- but the thesis is unambiguous from the second act onward. Woke Score: 48. Traditional Score: 16. The most commercially successful progressive comedy ever made.

    The Marvels (2023)

WOKE WOKE: 22.95 TRAD: 8.87 NET: -14.08 WOKE

    Genre: Superhero/Action/Comedy • Platform: Theatrical • Year: 2023

The film that broke the MCU's aura of commercial invincibility grossed $206 million against a $374 million budget, representing the lowest-grossing film in MCU history. The Marvels centers three female heroes whose dynamic generates the comedy, but the progressive identity-forward framing of every character relationship is the source of its woke content rather than the jokes themselves. The comedy elements are functional but rarely land, which may explain why audiences did not return for more. Woke Score: 22.95. Traditional Score: 8.87. A cautionary tale about what happens when franchise brand equity is deployed in service of ideology rather than story.

    Borderlands (2024)

WOKE LEAN WOKE: 17.5 TRAD: 8.26 NET: -9.24 WOKE

    Genre: Action/Comedy/Sci-Fi • Platform: Theatrical • Year: 2024

Borderlands is what happens when a studio spends $115 million trying to convert a beloved M-rated video game into a PG-13 Guardians of the Galaxy knockoff. The film debuted at 0% on Rotten Tomatoes and earned a D+ CinemaScore. The comedy misfires almost entirely, and the forced diversity casting decisions -- made by committee rather than by creative vision -- undermine what little tonal coherence the source material could have provided. Woke Score: 17.5. Traditional Score: 8.26. A commercial and creative failure that demonstrates the cost of prioritizing identity representation over storytelling craft in a franchise adaptation.

    American Fiction (2023)

WOKE LEAN WOKE: 13.3 TRAD: 5.25 NET: -8.05 WOKE

    Genre: Comedy/Drama/Satire • Platform: Theatrical • Year: 2023

The most intellectually interesting comedy in this ranking, because it is willing to satirize the same progressive institutions it ultimately endorses. American Fiction follows a Black novelist who, frustrated that publishers only want trauma narratives from Black authors, writes a deliberately offensive stereotype as a joke -- only to watch it become a bestseller. The film skewers the DEI publishing industry with genuine wit, then loses its nerve in the final act. Woke Score: 13.3. Traditional Score: 5.25. Worth watching for the satirical sharpness of its first two acts even if the conclusion softens what came before.

    Mean Girls (2024)

WOKE LEAN WOKE: 15.9 TRAD: 9.6 NET: -6.30 WOKE

    Genre: Musical/Comedy • Platform: Theatrical • Year: 2024

The fourth-generation adaptation of Tina Fey's original screenplay -- from book to film to Broadway to film again -- has been filtered through so many layers that the result is less a creative statement and more a photocopy of a photocopy. The 2024 version adds a non-binary character and updates the social media content for contemporary audiences, which generates the primary woke content. The comedy is competent but rarely inspired. Woke Score: 15.9. Traditional Score: 9.6. A franchise that originally satirized social cruelty has become a franchise that perpetuates it in more ideologically approved directions.

    Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024)

WOKE LEAN WOKE: 16 TRAD: 12 NET: -4.00 WOKE

    Genre: Comedy/Horror/Fantasy • Platform: Theatrical • Year: 2024

Tim Burton made a sequel to Beetlejuice 36 years after the original, and the result delivers about 60% of the joy of the first film. The Beetlejuice sequences work -- Michael Keaton is still magnetic -- but everything around them is a mixed bag of nostalgia and new progressive elements that feel grafted on rather than organic to the story. The woke content primarily shows up in character dynamics and identity-forward framing that the original did not carry. Woke Score: 16. Traditional Score: 12. Worth watching for Keaton and the nostalgia factor, but the sequel's ideological additions weaken what the original did through pure anarchic comedy.

    Hit Man (2024)

MIXED WOKE: 4 TRAD: 4 NET: 0 NEUTRAL

    Genre: Romantic Comedy/Crime • Platform: Netflix • Year: 2024

Richard Linklater and Glen Powell made the most pleasant surprise of 2024's theatrical calendar: a romantic crime comedy so relentlessly charming and well-paced that its missing moral center is easy to overlook on first viewing. Powell plays a philosophy professor who moonlights as a fake hitman for sting operations and falls for one of his marks. The film is funny and genuinely engaging. The comedy works because Powell commits fully to the premise. Woke Score: 4. Traditional Score: 4. Perfectly balanced at neutral -- a rare comedy that is neither a progressive lecture nor a traditional affirmation, just an enjoyable film that trusts its premise.

    Argylle (2024)

TRADITIONAL LEAN WOKE: 11.2 TRAD: 13 NET: +1.80 TRAD

    Genre: Action/Comedy/Spy • Platform: Theatrical (Apple) • Year: 2024

Argylle wants to be the smartest spy comedy in the room and ends up being the most exhausting. Matthew Vaughn's $200 million spy spectacle drowns in its own cleverness -- a nested meta-fiction about a novelist whose fictional spy somehow predicts real CIA operations. Sam Rockwell saves it from total collapse with a genuinely funny, physically committed performance. The film leans traditional primarily through Rockwell's character, who operates on a code of loyalty and professional competence. Woke Score: 11.2. Traditional Score: 13. Worth watching for Rockwell specifically; the rest of the film collapses under its own weight.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023)

TRADITIONAL LEAN WOKE: 4.97 TRAD: 8.64 NET: +3.67 TRAD

    Genre: Animated Comedy/Action • Platform: Theatrical • Year: 2023

The best animated TMNT film since the 2007 theatrical entry, and one of the most visually distinctive studio animated films in recent years. Jeff Rowe created a film that looks nothing like contemporary studio animation, with rough sketch-style aesthetics and kinetic looseness that suits the turtles perfectly. The father-son relationship between Splinter and the turtles provides the emotional core, and the film's identity-politics scaffolding is relatively light. Woke Score: 4.97. Traditional Score: 8.64. A genuine family comedy that delivers laughs and warmth -- the TMNT franchise back doing what it does best.

    Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)

TRADITIONAL LEAN WOKE: 6 TRAD: 10 NET: +4.00 TRAD

    Genre: Comedy/Action/Supernatural • Platform: Theatrical • Year: 2024

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is the franchise's best argument for itself in decades -- a film that demonstrates what nostalgic resurrection done right looks like while also showing the limits of nostalgia as a substitute for great storytelling. The original Ghostbusters cast returns alongside the Spengler family from Afterlife. The comedy works when the generations interact with genuine warmth, and the film's traditional family values content comes primarily from the Spengler father-daughter dynamics. Woke Score: 6. Traditional Score: 10. A compromise entry that pleases without thrilling but earns a traditional lean rating and delivers solid family-friendly supernatural comedy.

What the Data Tells Us About Comedy and Ideology

Looking at the full range of comedies from 2023 and 2024, a pattern emerges. The most woke comedies in this ranking are also, with the exception of Barbie, among the biggest commercial failures. The Marvels lost over $200 million. Borderlands was a catastrophe. Mean Girls underperformed expectations significantly. Barbie is the outlier: a film so skillfully marketed and executed that its progressive content delivered record-breaking revenue. But Barbie is the exception that proves the rule, not a blueprint anyone has successfully replicated.

The comedies that lean traditional in this ranking -- TMNT: Mutant Mayhem, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Argylle -- were not blockbusters, but they did not lose fortunes either. They delivered their entertainment value without lecturing their audiences. The audience showed up and got what it paid for.

Comedy is the genre most vulnerable to ideological capture because humor provides cover. The audience laughs, assumes goodwill, and absorbs the message. VirtueVigil scores are designed to remove that cover. You know what you are watching before you press play.
