Venom: The Last Dance (2024)
TRADITIONAL +14 TRADStrip out the cosmic mythology and what you have is a loyalty story: one partner chooses the other over their own survival. Venom merges with the Xenophages and leads them into the acid tanks to save Eddie Brock. Three films of bickering codependency built something real, and this film honors it with a genuine sacrifice that Tom Hardy plays with actual grief. No gender lectures, no diversity speeches, no ideology beyond 'love someone enough to die for them.' In 2024, that alone makes it stand out.

The Batman (2022)
TRADITIONAL +14 TRADMatt Reeves made a three-hour neo-noir crime film that happens to star a man in a rubber suit, and it is extraordinary. Bruce Wayne's moral arc moves from vengeance to hope, and the film earns that arc. Batman's absolute moral code against killing defines his identity. Paul Dano's Riddler is a precise rendering of online radicalization: legitimate grievances do not justify terrorism. The finale has Batman holding a torch in floodwater to guide survivors, choosing protection over punishment. That is a traditional hero's resolution.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023)
TRADITIONAL +12 TRADCritics abandoned it. Families loved it. The 84% audience score reflects what happens when a superhero film prioritizes family dynamics over spectacle. The Vasquez foster family is the rare depiction of the foster care system as a site of genuine love and loyalty. Billy Batson's arc is about worthiness, and the film's answer is that love and sacrifice confer worthiness rather than innate specialness. That is grace theology in a PG-13 package, and it works.

The Avengers (2012)
TRADITIONAL +12 TRADThe pre-woke MCU at its best. Loki's speech about humans being made to be ruled is presented as unambiguously evil, and an elderly German man standing up to him is presented as heroic. Tony Stark's arc ends with the narcissist choosing sacrifice. Steve Rogers' moral clarity is treated as strength, not naivety. The film's entire moral framework is duty over self, and it delivers that message without a single lecture. This is the MCU before the ideology captured it.

What Makes a Superhero Film Traditional?
The pattern across every film on this list is the same: the best superhero movies are built on sacrifice, not on identity. The hero who gives something up, whether it is memories, relationships, reputation, or life itself, scores higher than the hero who wins by being the most diverse person in the room.
