Most Woke Sci-Fi Movies Parents Should Know About — VirtueVigil Rankings 2026

From Poor Things to Companion, these 25 sci-fi films disguise progressive ideology behind spaceships, aliens, and futuristic spectacle. Every score backed by VirtueVigil's dual-metric methodology.

Science fiction has always been the genre of ideas. From its earliest days, it asked the biggest questions: what does it mean to be human, what kind of future are we building, and what happens when our technology outruns our wisdom. The best sci-fi lets you wrestle with those questions yourself. It presents a world and trusts you to draw conclusions.

But something changed. Over the last decade, science fiction became the preferred delivery vehicle for Hollywood's ideological project. Spaceships and aliens are now the spoonful of sugar that helps the political medicine go down. Environmental sermons dressed as alien invasions. Feminist manifestos wearing robot bodies. Anti-capitalist agitprop hiding behind holograms and wormholes. The genre that was once about wonder is now, in too many cases, about indoctrination.

Parents face a specific version of this problem. A child who wants to watch a movie about robots or distant planets is not asking for a lecture on gender theory or climate politics. But that is increasingly what they get. The spectacle is the lure. The ideology is the payload. By the time you recognize what you are watching, your family has already invested an hour.

Across 827 reviews in the VirtueVigil database, 96 films carry science fiction genre tags. This list ranks the 25 most ideologically aggressive entries, from most woke to least woke. Each entry links to the full VirtueVigil review with complete scoring methodology, content warnings for parents, and scene-by-scene breakdowns. Rankings are determined by VirtueVigil's dual-metric VVWS system: Traditional Score measures traditional values present (courage, sacrifice, family, honor), Woke Score measures progressive ideological content, and Margin is the gap between them. A negative margin means the progressive content outweighs the traditional. That is the number you should watch.

Some of these films are genuinely well-made. That does not make them safe. That makes them more dangerous. The best propaganda is the kind you enjoy.

#1 (Most Woke): Poor Things (2023)

STRONGLY WOKE TRAD: 9.4 WOKE: 46.5 MARGIN: -37 WOKE

Genre: Sci-Fi & Fantasy • Platform: Streaming • Year: 2023

Four Oscars. Emma Stone's fearless performance. Yorgos Lanthimos's unmistakable directorial vision. And underneath all of it, the most ideologically aggressive film in the VirtueVigil sci-fi database. Poor Things is the story of Bella Baxter, a woman brought back to life with a baby's brain in her adult skull, who then discovers sexual pleasure, autonomy, philosophy, and socialism -- in that order. The film frames every institution Bella encounters (marriage, medicine, polite society) as a prison designed to contain women. The 46.5 woke score reflects a film where feminist-liberation ideology is not subtext but the entire architectural premise. The 9.4 traditional score is one of the lowest in our database. Parents should understand: this is not a quirky period fantasy with steampunk aesthetics. It is a manifesto with production design, and it won Best Picture at the Venice Film Festival because the industry recognizes its own.

#2: The Creator (2023)

STRONGLY WOKE TRAD: 4.9 WOKE: 35.9 MARGIN: -31 WOKE

Genre: Action/Sci-Fi • Platform: Theatrical (20th Century Studios) • Year: 2023

Garreth Edwards made a genuinely beautiful film here. The visual effects, shot on location across Southeast Asia on a relatively modest $80 million budget, put most $200 million blockbusters to shame. The problem is what the beauty is in service of. The Creator is set in 2070, after America blames artificial intelligence for a nuclear attack on Los Angeles and goes to war against AI -- which has found sanctuary in "New Asia," depicted as a spiritual, Buddhist-coded society of peace and harmony. The United States military is the unambiguous villain: destructive, racist in its treatment of machines, willing to incinerate villages to achieve its objectives. The AI beings are the unambiguous victims: gentle, spiritual, yearning only to live in peace. At -31, this is one of the most ideologically lopsided films in the entire database. The craft is stunning. The politics are a sledgehammer.

#3: Disclosure Day (2026)

STRONGLY WOKE TRAD: 18.3 WOKE: 43.1 MARGIN: -25 WOKE

Genre: Science Fiction, Thriller • Platform: Theatrical • Year: 2026

Steven Spielberg's return to science fiction spectacle comes with a catch. The man who made Close Encounters of the Third Kind now makes films through a different lens entirely. Disclosur Day delivers the wonder and awe that Spielberg built his career on -- the alien contact sequences are visually magnificent -- but the film's contemporary instinct is to embed a climate-change sermon, an institutional-trust critique, and a governmental-transparency argument inside its first-contact premise. The 18.3 traditional score reflects genuine countervailing values (wonder, human resilience, the search for truth), but the 43.1 woke score dwarfs them. At -25, this is Spielberg operating at full ideological throttle, and parents who remember the filmmaker of E.T. and Jurassic Park should adjust expectations accordingly.

#4: Bugonia (2025)

STRONGLY WOKE TRAD: 8.5 WOKE: 28.9 MARGIN: -21 WOKE

Genre: Black Comedy/Sci-Fi Thriller • Platform: Theatrical • Year: 2025

Yorgos Lanthimos appears on this list twice for a reason. Bugonia wraps a radical anti-capitalist, environmentalist manifesto inside a genre-bending alien conspiracy kidnapping story starring Jesse Plemons as a conspiracy-obsessed beekeeper. The film is skillfully made and darkly funny, but its ideological architecture is unmistakable: capitalism is a parasite, corporations are destroying the planet, and only radical action -- including violence -- can correct course. The 8.5 traditional score is abysmal. The 28.9 woke score reflects a film where progressive messaging saturates every narrative beat. Parents renting what looks like a quirky sci-fi comedy should know they are actually renting a political pamphlet with an A-list cast.

#5: A Different Man (2024)

WOKE TRAD: 0.0 WOKE: 17.6 MARGIN: -18 WOKE

Genre: Thriller/Drama/Sci-Fi • Platform: Theatrical • Year: 2024

A traditional score of zero is vanishingly rare in the VirtueVigil database. It means the film contains no measurable traditional values whatsoever. A Different Man earns this distinction. What presents itself as an indie character study about self-acceptance and social anxiety is actually a film about male entitlement, romantic rejection, and violent revenge. It is a woke trap in the most literal sense: the narrative presents one story while delivering another. The progressive ideological content is not a seasoning. It is the entire meal. At -18, this is one of the purest ideological statements in the sci-fi genre, and parents should understand that "indie character study" is the packaging, not the product.

#6: Captain Marvel (2019)

WOKE TRAD: 3.3 WOKE: 19.4 MARGIN: -16 WOKE

Genre: Superhero / Sci-Fi • Platform: Theatrical • Year: 2019

The MCU's most deliberately ideological film, and the filmmakers would not dispute this characterization. Released on International Women's Day 2019, directed by a female co-director specifically because the studio wanted a woman behind the camera for their first female-led superhero film, scored by a female composer for the same reason -- Captain Marvel was conceived as a statement before it was conceived as entertainment. The 3.3 traditional score is among the lowest for any MCU entry, reflecting a film that strips away nearly every traditional value (family, community, faith) in favor of a message about female empowerment achieved entirely through individual will. Brie Larson's Carol Danvers does not grow. She remembers she was powerful all along and men were holding her back. At -16, this is Marvel Studios operating as political theater wearing a cape.

#7: Strange World (2022)

WOKE TRAD: 12.3 WOKE: 27.5 MARGIN: -15 WOKE

Genre: Animation/Sci-Fi/Adventure • Platform: Theatrical / Disney+ • Year: 2022

The movie where Disney stopped pretending. Strange World is a $180 million animated film about a family of explorers who discover that their miracle energy source -- a plant called Pando -- is actually a parasitic infection killing the giant turtle-like creature whose back their entire civilization lives on. The environmental allegory is so blunt it barely qualifies as allegory. The same-sex relationship between the teenage son and his crush is handled with the casualness of a studio that has decided inclusion is now mandatory, not notable. The 12.3 traditional score reflects some genuine family dynamics between three generations of men, but the 27.5 woke score overwhelms them. Strange World lost Disney an estimated $150 million at the box office. Audiences recognized what they were being sold and declined to purchase it. Parents who find it on Disney+ should know why.

#8: Eternals (2021)

WOKE TRAD: 6.0 WOKE: 19.7 MARGIN: -14 WOKE

Genre: Action/Sci-Fi/Superhero • Platform: Theatrical • Year: 2021

The most ambitious and most divisive film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and also the first MCU film to fail with both critics and general audiences (47% on Rotten Tomatoes, 5.9 on IMDB). Eternals arrived with an explicit diversity mandate baked into its casting: deaf superhero, gay superhero with on-screen kiss and family, South Asian superhero, Black superhero, child superhero, and the MCU's first sex scene. The ideological load is so heavy the film buckles under it. The 6.0 traditional score reflects a script where traditional family structures, faith, and community are either absent or explicitly deconstructed. At -14, Eternals proves that even the most successful franchise in film history cannot make audiences swallow ideology they did not order.

#9: Avatar (2009)

WOKE TRAD: 13.6 WOKE: 26.1 MARGIN: -13 WOKE

Genre: Sci-Fi / Action / Adventure • Platform: Theatrical • Year: 2009

The highest-grossing film in the history of cinema. $2.9 billion in its original release. More than $2.3 billion more in its 2022 re-release. More human beings have paid to watch Avatar than any other movie ever made. What they watched was James Cameron's most nakedly ideological project: a film in which a white Marine abandons his own species to join a noble-indigenous race of blue aliens who live in perfect harmony with nature, worship a goddess whose existence is scientifically confirmed, and are being exterminated by a corporate-military complex that speaks exclusively in the language of profit and force. The Na'vi are noble savages. The humans are irredeemable. The 26.1 woke score is massive. At -13, Avatar is the most successful piece of ideological entertainment ever produced, and every parent should understand what their children absorb when they watch it.

#10: Megalopolis (2024)

WOKE TRAD: 9.0 WOKE: 20.8 MARGIN: -12 WOKE

Genre: Epic / Science Fiction / Political Drama • Platform: Theatrical / VOD • Year: 2024

Francis Ford Coppola spent $120 million of his own money to make a film that opened to 1,800 theaters and earned back roughly $14 million. That commercial catastrophe obscures what the film actually is: a political manifesto set in a retro-futurist New Rome in which a visionary architect (Adam Driver) battles a corrupt mayor (Giancarlo Esposito) over the soul of civilization. Coppola's thesis -- that America is Rome in decline and only a radical reimagining of society can save it -- is delivered through dialogue so direct it barely qualifies as drama. The 9.0 traditional score reflects a film that views traditional institutions as the disease, not the cure. Megalopolis is a fascinating object. It is also a $120 million lecture about why everything you believe is wrong.

#11: Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017)

WOKE TRAD: 9.2 WOKE: 20.6 MARGIN: -11 WOKE

Genre: Sci-Fi / Action / Adventure • Platform: Theatrical • Year: 2017

Rian Johnson did not accidentally write a movie that deconstucted Star Wars mythology, humiliated its male heroes, and explicitly argued that the Jedi legacy was one of toxic failure. He did it on purpose, with enormous skill, and the result is a technically accomplished, cinematically confident film that is also one of the most ideologically aggressive studio blockbusters ever made. Luke Skywalker -- the hero of the original trilogy, the character who refused to kill his father because he believed in redemption -- is reimagined as a bitter coward who considered murdering his own nephew in his sleep. Every male character's plan fails. Every female character is proven correct. The film's argument is that the past must be burned down so the future can be built by different hands. At -11, The Last Jedi split the Star Wars fanbase permanently, and that division is the point. The film knows exactly what it is doing. Parents should too.

#12: Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025)

WOKE LEAN TRAD: 11.6 WOKE: 21.0 MARGIN: -9 WOKE

Genre: Epic Sci-Fi Action Adventure • Platform: Theatrical • Year: 2025

James Cameron has now made three Avatar films. Each one is technically extraordinary and ideologically predictable. Fire and Ash is both the best-looking film of 2025 and an almost proud repetition of the ideas the franchise first put on the table in 2009: anti-military messaging, noble-indigenous environmentalism, and corporate greed as the root of all evil. The Na'vi are still the moral center of the universe. The humans are still the disease. Cameron's craft is undeniable -- the underwater sequences set new standards for what digital cinema can achieve -- but the ideological architecture has not evolved an inch. The 11.6 traditional score reflects some countervailing elements (family bonds, tribal loyalty), but the 21.0 woke score carries the day. At -9, Fire and Ash is a beautiful object with an ugly habit of telling you what to think.

#13: Borderlands (2024)

WOKE LEAN TRAD: 8.3 WOKE: 17.5 MARGIN: -9 WOKE

Genre: Sci-Fi/Action/Comedy • Platform: Theatrical • Year: 2024

Borderlands is a $115 million creative bankruptcy filing. The adaptation of Gearbox's beloved M-rated video game was sanded down to a PG-13 Guardians of the Galaxy knockoff with Cate Blanchett as a bounty hunter leading a ragtag team. It debuted at 0% on Rotten Tomatoes, earned a D+ CinemaScore, and grossed $33 million worldwide against that $115 million budget. The woke score of 17.5 is high for a film this incompetent, reflecting a script that foregrounds female empowerment and found-family messaging at the expense of everything that made the game popular. The traditional score of 8.3 is generous. At -9, Borderlands proves that ideological signaling does not compensate for creative bankruptcy. It also proves that audiences can smell both from the parking lot.

#14: Dune: Part Two (2024)

WOKE LEAN TRAD: 11.6 WOKE: 19.4 MARGIN: -8 WOKE

Genre: Sci-Fi & Fantasy • Platform: Theatrical / Max • Year: 2024

Denis Villeneuve has accomplished something Hollywood rarely manages: he has adapted one of science fiction's most complex novels into a genuinely cinematic experience. Dune: Part Two is a visual and auditory achievement of the highest order. It is also a film that fundamentally alters Frank Herbert's source material in ideologically telling ways. In Herbert's novel, Paul Atreides is a warning about charismatic leaders and the religious impulse. In Villeneuve's adaptation, Paul's Fremen jihad is reframed through a lens of anti-colonial resistance, with the Fremen explicitly positioned as an oppressed indigenous people and the Harkonnens as extractive colonizers. Chani's character is rewritten to be a skeptic of the messiah narrative, transforming her from a believer into the film's moral conscience. At -8, Dune: Part Two is a masterpiece of craft with a progressive political framework that Herert would recognize but might not endorse.

#15: The Matrix Resurrections (2021)

WOKE LEAN TRAD: 8.8 WOKE: 15.1 MARGIN: -6 WOKE

Genre: Sci-Fi Action • Platform: Theatrical / HBO Max • Year: 2021

A fascinating failure. Lana Wachowski returned to the franchise she co-created and made a film that openly mocks the idea of franchise sequels while being one. The Matrix Resurrections is a work of genuine artistic engagement, and also a deeply personal statement from a director whose relationship to gender, identity, and the corporate entertainment machine has evolved dramatically since 1999. The film's meta-commentary on its own existence is its most interesting feature and its biggest liability as entertainment. The woke score of 15.1 reflects a script saturated with themes of identity liberation, systemic control, and the reclamation of self -- all filtered through Wachowski's unmistakable post-transition lens. At -6, Resurrections is a film that demands engagement and repays it unevenly. Parents should know its ideological project before pressing play.

#16: Mickey 17 (2025)

WOKE LEAN TRAD: 5.0 WOKE: 11.0 MARGIN: -6 WOKE

Genre: Sci-Fi & Fantasy • Platform: Theatrical (Warner Bros. / Plan B Entertainment) • Year: 2025

Let's dispense with the pretense: Mickey 17 is a Trump allegory. Bong Joon-ho has confirmed it publicly. The villain, Kenneth Marshall, is a populist politician who delivers speeches about making the colony great. He wears distinctive fashion. He has a loyal base that ignores his obvious corruption. Robert Pattinson plays Mickey, a disposable worker who is killed and reprinted every time he dies on a space colony mission. The film's argument -- about expendable labor, authoritarian populism, and the dignity of the individual -- is delivered through Bong's characteristic blend of dark comedy and genre subversion. At -6, Mickey 17 is less ideologically aggressive than Bong's Parasite, but parents should know that what looks like a quirky sci-fi comedy starring a Batman actor is actually a political cartoon with a nine-figure budget.

#17: Tron: Ares (2025)

WOKE LEAN TRAD: 5.6 WOKE: 11.0 MARGIN: -5 WOKE

Genre: Sci-Fi/Action • Platform: Theatrical • Year: 2025

Disney spent between $180 and $220 million on Tron: Ares. It grossed $142 million worldwide. That is not a small disaster. That is a creative and commercial failure significant enough to raise genuine questions about what Disney's franchise machine is producing and why. The tragedy is that some of the ideas are genuinely interesting: an AI program (Jared Leto's Ares) crossing into the real world, the blurring of digital and physical reality, questions about what constitutes consciousness. But the film buries those ideas under a thick layer of identity politics and corporate self-critique so heavy-handed it becomes camp. At -5, Tron: Ares is a warning about what happens when a studio is more interested in signaling virtue than telling a story.

#18: Jurassic World Rebirth (2025)

WOKE LEAN TRAD: 9.1 WOKE: 13.9 MARGIN: -5 WOKE

Genre: Action/Sci-Fi • Platform: Theatrical • Year: 2025

A $200 million movie that feels like it was written on a napkin during a studio lunch meeting. The pitch: Scarlett Johansson leads a team to a new island with new dinosaurs. The execution: exactly that, with nothing underneath. Set five years after Jurassic World Dominion, Rebirth offers the franchise's most transparent girl-boss protagonist, environmentalist messaging about genetic engineering that arrives without irony from a franchise about the dangers of genetic engineering, and action sequences that look expensive and feel weightless. The woke score of 13.9 is high for a film this narratively bankrupt. The traditional score of 9.1 reflects some baseline family-dynamic content that feels like an afterhought. At -5, Rebirth is the kind of film that proves a franchise can run out of ideas without running out of ideology.

#19: Supergirl (2026)

WOKE LEAN TRAD: 8.3 WOKE: 12.9 MARGIN: -5 WOKE

Genre: Action / Superhero / Sci-Fi • Platform: Theatrical • Year: 2026

Tom King's Eisner Award-winning comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow generated exactly two kinds of response: progressive critics calling it a feminist masterpiece, and traditional fans asking why their character had been replaced by someone who gets drunk on alien worlds and murders people. The film adaptation carries that tension forward. Supergirl is positioned within James Gunn's DCU as a darker counterweight to Superman -- she is the Kryptonian who actually watched her world die, who carries trauma rather than hope, and whose arc is about reclaiming agency after loss. The progressive framing is earned by the source material and executed with genuine craft. The woke score of 12.9 reflects the film's grounding in female trauma and empowerment. The 8.3 traditional score reflects some residual heroism and sacrifice. At -5, Supergirl is a film whose ideological project is coherent and well-executed. Parents should decide whether their kids are ready for a superhero story built on grief.

#20: The Electric State (2025)

WOKE LEAN TRAD: 9.5 WOKE: 13.6 MARGIN: -4 WOKE

Genre: Sci-Fi / Action-Adventure / Comedy • Platform: Netflix • Year: 2025

A $320 million argument that money cannot buy a soul. The Russo Brothers, riding the lingering fumes of their Avengers: Endgame triumph, took Simon Stalenhag's hauntingly beautiful illustrated novel about a girl and her robot wandering a decaying alternate America and turned it into a quippy, overstuffed action comedy starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt. Stalenhag's book is a meditation on loneliness, technology, and loss. The film is a meditation on how many explosions you can fit into a streaming budget. The 13.6 woke score comes from the film's anti-technology, anti-corporate messaging and its foregrounding of female agency. At -4, The Electric State is a tragedy of adaptation -- beautiful source material sanded into content, with just enough ideology to remind you that somebody had a point they wanted to make before the explosions started.

#21: The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023)

WOKE LEAN TRAD: 9.1 WOKE: 13.2 MARGIN: -4 WOKE

Genre: Action / Sci-Fi / Dystopian Drama • Platform: Theatrical • Year: 2023

The Hunger Games franchise has always been political -- Suzanne Collins built Panem as an explicit critique of inequality, media manipulation, and state violence -- but The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is the first entry where the villain wins and the hero leaves unredeemed. The film traces young Coriolanus Snow's transformation from ambitious student to the architect of the Hunger Games, with the dystopian state's machinery of oppression positioned as the true antagonist. The woke score of 13.2 reflects the franchise's foundational anti-authoritarian, anti-inequality framework. The 9.1 traditional score captures some genuine loyalty dynamics and the film's interest in how people become monsters. At -4, this is the most narratively interesting Hunger Games film and still carries the political DNA of the property. Parents should know the framework has not changed, even if the perspective has.

#22: The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026)

WOKE LEAN TRAD: 7.8 WOKE: 11.4 MARGIN: -4 WOKE

Genre: Science Fiction / Action / Adventure • Platform: Theatrical • Year: 2026

Jon Favreau's theatrical expansion of the Mandalorian universe brings Din Djarin and Grogu to the big screen with the same formula that made the Disney+ series a cultural phenomenon: space western pacing, minimal dialogue, and a central father-son relationship that the show treats with surprising sincerity. The theatrical format amplifies the action but dilutes the intimacy. The woke score of 11.4 comes primarily from the show's established commitment to female warriors (Bo-Katan, the Armorer) and its critique of imperial authoritarianism. The 7.8 traditional score is lower than you might expect for a show about a warrior protecting a child -- the film spends more time on action spectacle than on the quiet character moments that made the series distinctive. At -4, The Mandalorian and Grogu is a fine Star Wars movie that does not quite recapture what made the show special.

#23: Lightyear (2022)

WOKE LEAN TRAD: 6.6 WOKE: 10.2 MARGIN: -4 WOKE

Genre: Animation/Sci-Fi/Action • Platform: Theatrical • Year: 2022

Lightyear is a mediocre Pixar film that became a cultural flashpoint. The same-sex kiss between Alisha Hawthorne and her wife -- restored after initially being cut, then weaponized by both sides of the culture war -- dominates the discourse around the film and obscures the simpler problem: it is just not very good. The movie's central conceit -- that this is the film Andy from Toy Story watched in 1995 that made him want a Buzz Lightyear action figure -- collapsess under scrutiny. Buzz's character has none of the cartoonish bravado that made the toy version iconic. The woke score of 10.2 is modest by Pixar standards, but the 6.6 traditional score is telling: this is a film that forgot to include the warmth, humor, and emotional intelligence that Pixar built its reputation on. At -4, Lightyear is a cultural artifact more interesting as a case study than as a movie.

#24: Arrival (2016)

WOKE LEAN TRAD: 9.2 WOKE: 12.3 MARGIN: -3 WOKE

Genre: Science Fiction / Drama • Platform: Paramount+ / Apple TV+ • Year: 2016

There is a genuinely extraordinary film buried inside Arrival. The central mystery -- an alien language that rewires the brain's experience of time -- and the devastating final revelation about Louise's daughter are among the most emotionally intelligent sci-fi conceits in recent memory. The problem is the ideological wrapper. Denis Villeneuve's film frames the military response to alien contact as paranoid and trigger-happy, positions international cooperation as the only moral path, and treats Louise's choice to have a child she knows will die young as an affirmation of life that the film explicitly contrasts with more "traditional" moral frameworks. The woke score of 12.3 is higher than many viewers remember, because the ideological content is delivered through emotional manipulation rather than argument. That is the most effective kind. At -3, Arrival is a beautiful film that parents should watch before showing their children, so they can discuss what it is actually arguing.

#25: Companion (2025)

MIXED TRAD: 5.0 WOKE: 7.0 MARGIN: -2 WOKE

Genre: Sci-Fi & Fantasy • Platform: Theatrical (New Line Cinema / Warner Bros.) • Year: 2025

Companion is a sharper movie than you expect and a more ideologically loaded one than the marketing lets on. Drew Hancock's debut feature stars Sophie Thatcher as a woman who discovers she is an AI companion, and the film uses that premise to deliver a feminist thesis about AI relationships with the efficiency of a surgical instrument. The craft is tight, the performances are strong, and the film earns its tension honestly. The woke score of 7.0 is modest, reflecting a film whose ideological project is present but not overwhelming. The 5.0 traditional score reflects the near-total absence of countervailing values. At -2, Companion sits right on the border of "mixed" territory -- a genuinely well-made genre film whose politics are woven into its premise rather than layered on top. Parents should know what the premise is arguing before pressing play. The film will not announce it for them.
