A woke trap is not just a woke movie. Plenty of films wear their ideology on their sleeve from frame one. A woke trap is something more calculated: a film that spends the first half of its runtime earning your trust, then uses that trust to deliver an ideological payload you never saw coming. The bait is real. The entertainment is real. The switch happens after you are already invested.
VirtueVigil coined the term for exactly this pattern. Below are ten films that meet the criteria: negative score margins, and woke content that surfaces late or is buried beneath a surface audiences were conditioned to trust. Know before you go.

Lilo and Stitch (2025)
WOKE LEAN WOKE TRAP DETECTED -6 WOKEDisney's live-action remake faithfully adapts the animated original's celebration of ohana, family sacrifice, and sisterhood for 75 percent of its runtime. It earns genuine emotional investment in Nani and Lilo. Then it rewrites the finale: Nani gives Lilo away to a neighbor so she can pursue a mainland scholarship and career. The original's climax, where Nani proves she can be a capable family guardian, is replaced by a message that self-actualization outranks keeping your family intact. The delay is the trap. Kids and parents are already rooting for the family before the film pivots on them.

Don't Worry Darling (2022)
WOKE WOKE TRAP DETECTED -19 WOKEMarketed as a lush 1950s psychological thriller with Florence Pugh and Harry Styles, every trailer sold gorgeous visuals, marital passion, and cult mystery. What audiences received was an anti-patriarchy polemic whose villain is explicitly based on Jordan Peterson, a detail Olivia Wilde revealed only after release. The simulation premise is not revealed until roughly the 80-minute mark in a 123-minute film. Conservative families drawn in by period aesthetics and star power will not find the full ideological argument until well past the halfway point.

Civil War (2024)
WOKE LEAN WOKE TRAP DETECTED -4 WOKEAlex Garland refused to name the President's party and the marketing sold the film as purely apolitical. Conservatives exhausted by preachy cinema showed up expecting neutrality. What they found was a carefully constructed press-freedom parable: the press is heroic, the government is fascistic, and the morally righteous characters are all female photojournalists. The Texas-California alliance was designed to confuse, not represent. The apolitical marketing is the bait. The progressive architecture is what lives inside it.

Dune: Part Two (2024)
WOKE LEAN WOKE TRAP DETECTED -8 WOKEThe first hour is spectacular: Hans Zimmer's score, Denis Villeneuve's visuals, a genuine adventure setup. Then Dune: Part Two pivots into an explicit anti-messiah political argument. Chani is reframed as the sole moral voice condemning Paul's rise, and the film's warning against religious-nationalist leadership does not fully surface until well past the 50-minute mark. Conservative viewers who identify with faith-based community and charismatic leadership will find the film's conclusion significantly more troubling than anything the opening suggested.

Joker: Folie a Deux (2024)
MIXED WOKE TRAP DETECTED -2 WOKEThe original Joker (2019) was a billion-dollar sensation that resonated powerfully with disaffected and conservative-leaning viewers. The sequel weaponizes that goodwill. Nothing in the marketing signaled that Folie a Deux would systematically deconstruct, humiliate, and ultimately murder the character audiences invested in. Conservative viewers who showed up expecting a continuation of the first film's raw character study walked into a calculated lecture about why they were wrong to identify with Arthur Fleck in the first place.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022)
STRONGLY WOKE WOKE TRAP DETECTED -24 WOKEGlass Onion presents itself as equal-opportunity satire mocking all flavors of elite hypocrisy. The puzzle mechanics are genuinely entertaining. But the film's sympathies are precise: the villain is coded as a right-leaning tech bro with COVID-denier energy, the hero is a Black woman reclaiming stolen intellectual credit, and the climax requires audiences to celebrate the destruction of irreplaceable private property as righteous. Conservative viewers who enjoy the mystery may not notice they have been served a tightly constructed progressive fable until it is already over.

Wuthering Heights (2026)
WOKE WOKE TRAP DETECTED -10 WOKEThe Bronte name sells the ticket. Emerald Fennell's agenda fills the seat. Trailers sold gothic romance, the iconic Heathcliff and Cathy love story, and the prestige weight of literary adaptation. The film delivers explicit BDSM content, a masturbation scene, and degradation material not present in Emily Bronte's source novel. Audiences who bought their ticket for one of English literature's defining love stories found something constructed to shock and subvert rather than adapt. The literary pedigree is the cover.

Predator: Badlands (2025)
WOKE LEAN WOKE TRAP DETECTED -4 WOKEThe Predator brand carries decades of goodwill with conservative audiences who love the original R-rated masculine action films. Badlands exploits that goodwill to deliver a PG-13 family adventure built on feminist messaging, a defanged male lead, an all-female found-family structure, and a cute toyetic sidekick. This is Disney house style retrofitted onto a franchise built on opposite values. Fans who showed up for the spirit of 1987 found a franchise wearing a familiar mask over a completely different body.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024)
WOKE LEAN WOKE TRAP DETECTED -4 WOKEThe marketing leaned hard on 1988 nostalgia: Beetlejuice is back, Michael Keaton is back, the sandworms are back. What it downplayed is that the film's emotional center is a mother-daughter conflict in which a Gen Z daughter resents her mother's entire worldview, Charles Deetz is killed off-screen without ceremony, and Delia's feminist art career is played as endorsement as much as comedy. The nostalgia is genuine. The film wrapped around it runs on 2024 values that conservative families raised on the original were not warned about.

One Battle After Another (2025)
WOKE LEAN WOKE TRAP DETECTED -4 WOKEThe trailer sells car chases, gunfights, and Leonardo DiCaprio doing his thing. All of those elements are genuinely there. But beneath the surface thrills, Paul Thomas Anderson has constructed a deeply political film about immigration, race, white supremacy, and state violence. The action movie veneer gets conservative viewers in the door. The progressive politics are what they encounter once seated. The action is not dishonest. The framing of everything underneath it is a different matter.

How to Use This List
The defining characteristic of a woke trap is not the woke content itself. It is the delay. These ten films were constructed to earn your emotional investment before delivering their ideological argument. They are more concerning than openly woke films because the manipulation is architectural. VirtueVigil exists precisely to surface this pattern before you buy a ticket.
