Our Verdict on Bullet Train
David Leitch is the co-director of the original John Wick, still the best action film of the 2010s. Bullet Train is not John Wick. It is something more deliberately chaotic: a candy-colored action comedy set on a Japanese high-speed train, populated by assassins with quirky code names and overlapping kill orders and very bad luck. It is extremely enjoyable. It is also substantially less coherent than Leitch's better work.
Brad Pitt plays Ladybug, an unlucky operative who just wants to complete a simple bag pickup and get off the train at the next stop. He will not get off for another two hours. That setup is the film's central comic engine: a man with a competency deficit in an environment where everyone around him is lethally skilled, surviving through a combination of luck, judo, and the universe's grudging cooperation.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Brian Tyree Henry as Tangerine and Lemon are the film's real discovery. Their bickering partnership is the heart of the movie. Tangerine is furious, professional, British, and certain that Lemon is going to get them both killed. Lemon is philosophical, calm, obsessed with Thomas the Tank Engine as a personality assessment framework, and probably smarter than Tangerine will ever admit. Their chemistry is genuine. Their scenes are the funniest in the film.
Joey King as the Prince is the film's most interesting character on paper: a young woman who appears to be a damsel-in-distress and is actually the most dangerous person on the train. As a villain she is effective. The film does not quite have the space to develop her beyond smart-and-evil, but that is the screenplay's limitation rather than King's.
The film's traditional content comes from two sources: the karma plot and the Kimura subplot.
Karma is the structural premise. Every character on the train is there because of what they have done in the past. The bad choices made, the people hurt, the loyalties betrayed: all of it arrives on this train in the form of other bad choices and other betrayals. White Death's plan is an elaborate cosmic punishment delivery system. When it resolves, the people who deserved punishment received it and the people who deserved something better got something better. This is moral order imposed on chaos. It is traditional in the sense that fairy tales are traditional.
The Kimura subplot is the film's emotional core. Andrew Koji plays a Japanese man who is on the train because someone pushed his young son off a roof. His son is in a coma. He has come to kill whoever is responsible. His father, The Elder, played with immense quiet authority by Hiroyuki Sanada, follows him because a father's job does not end when his son becomes a man. The scenes between Koji and Sanada are the only times the film finds genuine feeling underneath the stylized violence. A father trying to save his son from grief, while his son tries to avenge his own. This is a traditional story, and the film knows it, and it gives these scenes room to breathe.
Leitch's direction is confident and kinetic. The train is a genuinely creative action space: the compressed corridors, the observation car, the luggage racks all become terrain for inventive fight choreography. The film's visual palette is deliberately oversaturated: this is a world more vivid than reality, which insulates the violence from feeling genuinely dangerous.
The weaknesses are real. The film is about twenty minutes too long. The third-act reveals pile up past the point of satisfying complication into something approaching incoherence. Some audiences will find the Pitt performance exhausting rather than charming. The critics who gave it 53% on Rotten Tomatoes are not wrong about the craft problems. But the audience score of 82% reflects something real too: this film is genuinely fun to watch, and it is built around traditional values of karma, paternal love, and male loyalty.
For audiences who want a smart, stylized action film that treats them as adults without lecturing them about anything, Bullet Train delivers. Nothing about this movie will make you feel like you are being corrected. It just wants to show you Brad Pitt fight people on a very fast train, and it does that well.

His career runs from co-directing the original John Wick through Atomic Blonde (2017), Deadpool 2 (2018), Hobbs & Shaw (2019), and now Bullet Train. The through-line is kinetic action choreography, competent protagonists, and stylized violence treated as entertainment rather than commentary. Atomic Blonde contains a female protagonist and a bisexual relationship that earns mild woke scoring on its own review. Bullet Train has none of that.
