Casino is not a woke trap. It is one of the most uncompromisingly traditional films in the Scorsese canon. Every frame is in service of a moral universe built on the oldest story in the book: a man builds an empire, his greed and his wife destroy it, and he is left with nothing but the knowledge that he had it all and threw it away. Nothing is hidden. The film's first hour, its middle hour, and its final hour all deliver exactly the same value proposition.

Casino is Martin Scorsese's longest film, his most operatic, and in some ways his most conservative. Released in 1995, it is the third panel of the triptych that began with Mean Streets and reached its apotheosis with Goodfellas --- but where Goodfellas is about the seduction of the criminal life, Casino is about the accounting that comes after. It is a film about what happens when the party is over and the bill comes due, and it arrives at a conclusion that would make a Puritan nod in recognition: you cannot cheat the house. The house always wins.
Robert De Niro plays Sam 'Ace' Rothstein, a legendary handicapper sent to Las Vegas by the Chicago Outfit to run the Tangiers casino. Ace is good at his job --- so good that the money flows in faster than anyone can count it. And that, in the moral universe of Casino, is the beginning of the problem. Because the money attracts Joe Pesci's Nicky Santoro, Ace's childhood friend and the Outfit's most reliable enforcer, and the two of them --- the brains and the muscle --- think they can run Las Vegas like they ran the streets of Chicago. They are wrong. Las Vegas is the desert, and the desert has rules of its own.
Casino scores at TRADITIONAL (+12) because its moral architecture is built on the oldest and most unforgiving framework in Western storytelling: pride before the fall. The film does not ask you to sympathize with Ace Rothstein. It asks you to watch him destroy himself, piece by piece, through the same qualities that made him successful --- his arrogance, his need for control, his inability to trust anyone except the one person he should trust least. The woke dimension is almost nonexistent. There is no identity politics, no institutional critique wrapped in progressive language, no suggestion that the system is to blame. The characters destroy themselves, and the film is crystal clear about this.

The secret subject of Casino is not organized crime. It is the relationship between work and love, and what happens when a man who understands everything about one understands nothing about the other. Ace Rothstein can run a casino with mathematical precision. He can count cards in his sleep. What he cannot do is read the woman he marries. Ginger McKenna, played by Sharon Stone in the performance of her career, is the film's tragic engine. She tells Ace exactly who she is from the very first scene --- a hustler, a con artist, a woman who loves money and the men who can give it to her. He hears her and does not listen. He thinks his competence in one domain will transfer to another, and the film's great insight is that it will not. Love is not a system to be optimized. It cannot be managed. And the things we are best at are often the things that destroy us. That is a profoundly conservative insight, and Casino delivers it at three hours without apology.
Parental Guidance
Rated R for extremely strong violence, pervasive strong language, drug use, and adult themes. This is not a film for casual viewing. The violence is among the most brutal in Scorsese's work. The vice scene in particular is difficult to watch. Recommended for adults who can handle unflinching depictions of moral collapse. Not suitable for children or young teens under any circumstances.
