Children of Men is one of the most politically complicated films ever made, and that is precisely what makes it a great movie. It is also, unexpectedly, one of the most profoundly pro-life films of the 21st century -- something almost nobody writing about it at the time of release seemed prepared to admit.

The surface-level politics are what everyone noticed in 2006: a critique of the war on terror, Guantanamo-style refuge cages, a British government that traded liberty for security. Cuaron was clearly commenting on the Bush-Blair era, and those critiques land. The film depicts a Western government as a fascist nightmare. That is the anti-authoritarian layer.

But the deeper argument of Children of Men is radically traditional. Humanty has lost the ability to reproduce. The world is dying. And then a woman becomes pregnant. The question the film asks is not what are this woman's reproductive rights but what are we willing to do to protect this child? Every character who encounters Kee's pregnancy is transformed by it. Theo, who starts the film unable to feel anything, gives his life so the baby can reach safety. The cynic becomes the protector.

Curoa loads the film with Christian imagery, and it is not subtle. Kee reveals her pregnancy in a barn, sitting among animals. The baby is born during a war zone evacuation. When the crying infant is carried through a battle, soldiers on both sides stop shooting. Some cross themselves. A ceasefire, for a baby. It is the most explicit Madonna-and-child iconography in modern cinema outside of The Nativity Story, which happened to release the same year.

The tragedy, in retrospect, is that a film this pro-life was celebrated by the very critics who would normally recoil from that message. They praised it for the anti-war stuff and either missed or quietly ignored the part where the whole movie is about protecting a pregnant woman and her baby because that life is sacred.

At VVWS scoring, Children of Men lands at TRADITIONAL with a margin of +11. The woke tropes are real: the government-as-villain, the climate-adjacent collapse premise, the anti-Western depiction of Britain. But they are symptoms of the world the film depicts, not the thesis. The thesis is that a child is worth dying for, and that is about as traditional as filmmaking gets.

For parents: this is an R-rated film with brutal violence. But if you have a mature teen, it is one of the best discussion films you can watch together. The pro-life argument is embedded in the story so deeply that it does not even feel like an argument -- it just feels true.
