✅ NOT A WOKE TRAP

Enola Holmes 3 is not a woke trap. The woke ideological content is visible from the opening scenes: the anti-imperial framing of British history, Enola's girl-boss detective work, and the female Moriarty as criminal mastermind are all established early. Nothing is concealed or bait-and-switched. Audiences who have seen the first two films know exactly what ideological lane this franchise occupies.

Our Verdict on Enola Holmes 3

Enola Holmes 3 continues the franchise's pivot from charming Victorian detective romp into something heavier and more politically pointed. The film opens in Malta, where Enola and Tewkesbury have arrived for their wedding. Sherlock is there too, and he is openly against the marriage, worried his sister is throwing away her independence. Then he vanishes. What follows is a globe-trotting mystery that uncovers a decades-old conspiracy involving British officers who stole Afghan gold during the colonial wars and covered it up through a network of corrupt aristocrats and military brass. The villain behind it all is Moriarty, now living under the alias Professor Adeline Rathe, manipulating everyone including Enola herself. The mystery is satisfying enough, but the political messaging is not subtle. British imperialism is the villain. The heroes are the Maltese freedom fighters and the wronged Afghans whose gold is returned in the final act. Tewkesbury, upon learning of his father's involvement, renounces his aristocratic title and chooses a commoner's name. Enola keeps her own surname. Sherlock, after being tortured and nearly killing Moriarty, is talked down by his sister and admits she is his equal. The film works as a detective story but functions even better as a 2026-vintage lesson in post-colonial guilt. The Girl Boss framing, present since the first film, is amplified here to the point where Sherlock is reduced to a damsel in distress who needs rescuing and moral instruction. That is a choice. The franchise's audience will likely be split: fans of the first two films who showed up for the whimsy and fourth-wall-breaking charm may find the heavier political freight exhausting. Viewers who agree with the film's politics will feel seen. VirtueVigil scores what is on the screen, and what is on the screen is a film that uses the Holmes universe as a vehicle for anti-Western historical revisionism. The traditional elements are real but thin: the wedding does happen, justice is restored, the good-evil binary holds. Those save it from a full WOKE verdict, but only just.

Creative Team Deep Dive

Director: Philip Barantini

MODERATELY PROGRESSIVE. Barantini is known for the highly regarded single-shot restaurant drama Boiling Point (2021), a film about class, stress, and the service industry that carries progressive class sympathies but is primarily a human drama. He replaces Harry Bradbeer as director for this installment, and the shift is noticeable: less fourth-wall-breaking whimsy, heavier thematic weight. Barantini does not impose his own ideological lens here. The ideological content comes from the script by Jack Thorne, which adapts Nancy Springer's book series with 2026 political instincts layered on top.

Philip Barantini is a British director and former actor whose breakout came with Boiling Point, a single-take kitchen drama starring Stephen Graham that was critically acclaimed for its technical ambition and social realism. He has since directed Accused for Channel 4 and The Responder, a BBC police drama starring Martin Freeman. Enola Holmes 3 is his biggest-budget project to date. His direction is competent but the material does not give him room to excel. The Malta setting is lovely, the action sequences are serviceable, but the film feels more like a delivery mechanism for its political content than a showcase for Barantini's considerable talent.

Content Breakdown

Adult Viewer Insight

Enola Holmes 3 is a film that uses the Holmes universe as a vehicle for post-colonial historical revisionism, and adult viewers will find it either cathartic or exhausting depending on their priors. The film opens in Malta, where Enola and Tewkesbury have arrived for their wedding. Sherlock disapproves of the marriage, worried his sister is throwing away her independence. Then he vanishes. The mystery that follows uncovers a conspiracy of British officers who stole Afghan gold during the colonial wars and covered it up through a network of aristocrats and military brass. Moriarty, now living under the alias Professor Adeline Rathe, orchestrates it all. The political messaging is not subtext. British imperialism is the villain. The heroes are the Maltese freedom fighters and the wronged Afghans. Tewkesbury renounces his aristocratic title. Enola keeps her own surname. Sherlock, after being tortured, is rescued by his sister and admits she is his equal. For adults, the film is valuable as a diagnostic tool. The franchise began as a charming Victorian detective romp with light progressive framing. It has now arrived at a place where Sherlock Holmes -- the greatest detective in English literature -- is reduced to a damsel in distress who needs moral instruction from his younger sister. That is not an organic evolution of the character. It is a decision. The craft remains professional: Millie Bobby Brown is charismatic, the mystery structure works, the locations are beautiful. But the film cannot tell a story about Victorian England without indicting it, cannot feature a male hero without diminishing him, and cannot imagine a happy ending that does not involve the redistribution of colonial wealth. The traditional elements that saved it from a full WOKE verdict -- the wedding happens, justice is restored, the good-evil binary holds -- are real but thin. For adults who want to understand where franchise filmmaking landed in 2026, Enola Holmes 3 is essential viewing. For adults who remember when Sherlock Holmes solved mysteries rather than needed rescuing, it is a funeral.

Parental Guidance

Enola Holmes 3 is a family adventure-mystery with action sequences suitable for older children and teens. The film contains action violence consistent with the franchise: fistfights, chases, explosions, and characters in peril. Violence is stylized rather than graphic. No blood, no gore. Sherlock is tortured off-screen; his injuries (bruising, exhaustion) are shown afterward. No sexual content. Language is mild. The film's political content is significant: British colonialism is depicted as a system of theft and exploitation; aristocrats conspire to cover up war crimes; Moriarty's alias as a female professor positions her as an oppressed genius. The film's resolution involves the return of stolen gold to Afghanistan and the Maltese, which may be worth discussing with teens. Tewkesbury renounces his aristocratic title and adopts a commoner's name. Enola retains her surname after marriage. These choices are presented as morally correct without argument. The film also contains positive elements: the wedding between Enola and Tewkesbury is treated as a genuine commitment; the mystery is solved through intelligence and perseverance; Sherlock and Enola's sibling bond strengthens through shared adversity. Recommended for ages 11 and up. Parents should be aware the film is politically freighted and may want to discuss the historical claims with teens after viewing.
