The film opens in Malta, where Enola and Tewkesbury have arrived for their wedding. Sherlock is there too, and he is openly against the marriage, worried his sister is throwing away her independence. Then he vanishes. What follows is a globe-trotting mystery that uncovers a decades-old conspiracy involving British officers who stole Afghan gold during the colonial wars and covered it up through a network of corrupt aristocrats and military brass. The villain behind it all is Moriarty, now living under the alias Professor Adeline Rathe, manipulating everyone including Enola herself. The mystery is satisfying enough, but the political messaging is not subtle. British imperialism is the villain. The heroes are the Maltese freedom fighters and the wronged Afghans whose gold is returned in the final act. Tewkesbury, upon learning of his father's involvement, renounces his aristocratic title and chooses a commoner's name. Enola keeps her own surname. Sherlock, after being tortured and nearly killing Moriarty, is talked down by his sister and admits she is his equal. The film works as a detective story but functions even better as a 2026-vintage lesson in post-colonial guilt.
