The story retells two intertwined Greek myths: Orpheus (Reeve Carney) and Eurydice (Eva Noblezada), young lovers struggling to survive in a world of famine and cold, and Hades (Patrick Page) and Persephone (Amber Gray), the king and queen of the underworld whose marriage has soured into industrial routine. Orpheus, a naive but gifted musician, is writing a song he believes will bring spring back to the world and restore the natural order. When Eurydice, starving and desperate, accepts Hades's offer of security in his underground factory, Orpheus descends to bring her back, armed only with his music and his faith.

Mitchell's score, which won the 2019 Tony for Best Original Score, is the star here. It is folk, jazz, blues, and gospel stitched together by a book that treats myth not as allegory but as living emotional truth. The songs are hymns to doubt ('Doubt Comes In'), love ('All I've Ever Known'), and the human capacity to keep trying despite every reason to give up ('Wait for Me'). When Reeve Carney's Orpheus sings 'Epic III' (the completed song that reminds Hades of his love for Persephone), the moment is transcendent. You are watching a man use art to restore a broken marriage, and it works.

The film's politics are right there on the surface. Hadestown is an industrial hellscape: a factory where workers trade their freedom for security, where 'Why We Build the Wall' is Hades's anthem of control, and where Persephone runs a speakeasy behind her husband's back just to feel alive. Mitchell wrote these songs between 2006 and 2010, before Trump, before the wall became a partisan symbol. The critique is of alienation itself: what happens when you trade love for security, when a marriage becomes a business arrangement, when a society chooses order over spring. It is a labor critique in the Woody Guthrie tradition, not an activist pamphlet. And crucially, the show does not solve these problems through political revolution. It solves them through art, through love, and through the courage to turn around and look.

That is the show's traditional heart, and it is why the VVWS lands at TRADITIONAL +15. Orpheus is a self-sacrificing hero who descends into hell for the woman he loves. Hades is redeemed not by a sensitivity seminar but by remembering the man he was when he first loved Persephone. Their marriage is restored. The Fates may mock our choices, and Hermes may warn us from the first song that this is 'a sad tale,' but the message of the ending (the post-curtain 'We Raise Our Cups') is that trying was worth it. Telling the story matters. Love matters, even when it fails.

The adaptation question is simple because there is no adaptation. This is a recorded performance, 100 percent faithful to the stage show. The only question is whether Sullivan's camera work captures the energy of live theater, and the answer is: about as well as a screen can. Some of the ensemble choreography loses scale in close-up, and a few numbers ('Wait for Me') benefit from the communal energy of a live house in ways a screen cannot replicate. But the performances, especially Patrick Page's bass-baritone Hades and Andre De Shields's velvet-and-gravel Hermes, are definitive. Page's voice is its own special effect.

Hadestown: The Musical is a gift to anyone who loves musical theater and cannot get to New York or London. It is also a reminder that the most powerful stories are the oldest ones: a man walks into hell with nothing but a song, and for a moment, even death stops to listen.
