What writer-director Alexander Ullom has actually made is one of the most disciplined horror debuts in recent memory: a 90-minute existential pressure cooker that never leaves the car, never explains its premise, and never stops being terrifying precisely because of what it refuses to explain. Four recent graduates (Phinehas Yoon, Akira Jackson, Noah Toth, Mitchell Cole) head out for a late-night drive and accidentally turn onto a two-lane forest road that goes on forever. They cannot turn around. They cannot get out for more than 90 seconds without being swarmed by silent figures from the woods. The car never runs out of gas. They never get hungry or tired. The odometer spins into six figures and keeps going. The premise is Kafka by way of The Twilight Zone, but Ullom's execution is closer to Sartre: the road is a condition, not a puzzle to be solved. What matters is how you respond to it. James (Yoon) responds by refusing to quit. He drives. He prays. He eventually does 1.1 million miles alone, after his friends give up and walk into the trees. When he finally reaches the end of the road, he finds a sign that reads ROAD ENDS, a circle of abandoned cars from every era, and nothing else. There is no exit, no revelation, no deus ex machina. He eats the single Clif Bar he has been saving. He weeps. Then he gets back in the car, drives the other way, finds another stranded person, and starts the conversation again. The film's refusal to offer catharsis will frustrate viewers who want horror to resolve, but that refusal is the point. The road is life. You do not escape it.
