A Green Day-inspired musical road comedy about three Kansas City teenagers who steal a car and drive to Los Angeles to open for their favorite band, it could have been a cringe-fest of epic proportions. Instead, it lands somewhere between a warm hug and a crowd-pleasing concert encore. Mason Thames anchors the film as Tommy, a kid so desperate to believe his life is about to change that he falls for an obvious prank call from his deadbeat older brother Wayne (Keen Ruffalo). Alongside bandmates Fred (Kylr Coffman) and Chad (Ryan Foust), Tommy barrels cross-country while the band's music weaves through the narrative in surprisingly effective fashion. Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool appear as themselves with the kind of good-natured self-awareness that sells the entire premise. It helps that the original songs written by Armstrong and Dirnt have genuine melodic bite, making the band's dream feel earned rather than manufactured.
