Aliens cannot be a woke trap. The film carries a +14 TRAD margin and a TRADITIONAL verdict. Woke traps require a negative margin by definition. Aliens is a great film for the same reasons any great film is great: it knows exactly what it wants to do, it does it with complete commitment, and it makes you feel things in your body that most films can only gesture toward.
James Cameron took Ridley Scott's masterpiece of claustrophobic horror and turned it into something different: a military action film where the horror element is still present but the primary question has shifted from 'can she survive?' to 'can she protect someone else?' That shift is not small. It changes everything.
Ellen Ripley returns from the first film having drifted in hypersleep for fifty-seven years. Everyone she knew is dead. Her daughter aged and died while she was asleep. When she goes back to the planet where the first film's crew encountered the alien, she is not going for adventure or redemption. She is going because a little girl named Newt is still alive on a colony overrun by creatures that cannot be reasoned with and cannot be stopped by standard military protocol.
The maternal protection narrative is the film's most traditional element and its most powerful one. Ripley does not fight for abstract principles or for the Colonial Marines or for Weyland-Yutani's asset recovery. She fights for one child. The simplicity of that motivation is the film's moral spine, and Cameron never bends it. When Ripley climbs into the power loader for the film's climactic battle with the Alien Queen, the reason is not that she is demonstrating female competence or making a political point about gender in action cinema. It is that the Queen has Newt. The Queen is between Ripley and Newt. There is nothing else to calculate.
The Colonial Marines deserve their own mention because they are one of cinema's great ensemble creations. Cameron wrote them as real soldiers: competent, fallible, arrogant about their capability until the capability hits its limit, then genuinely frightened in the way real people get frightened. Hudson's game-over monologue is funny and then heartbreaking because the humor comes from recognizing genuine panic. Hicks is the template for what a reliable man looks like under pressure: no drama, no speeches, just clear-eyed assessment and executed action. The marines are not mockable. They are not symbols. They are people doing a hard job in a situation that outstrips their training, and Cameron treats that with respect.
Corporate villain Burke, played with unsettling normalcy by Paul Reiser, is the film's most ideologically loaded element. Weyland-Yutani's willingness to use human beings as biological delivery mechanisms for the alien species is a standard anti-corporate narrative. It is also the film's weakest element ideologically, the suggestion that institutional profit motive always eventually produces monstrous decisions. That critique reads as more progressive today than it did in 1986. But Burke is specific enough as a character, a mid-level company man doing what company men do, that the critique does not feel like a political manifesto. He is a recognizable type, not a symbol.
James Horner's score and Adrian Biddle's cinematography are both essential. The industrial texture of the sets, the constant humidity and machinery and damage, creates a world that feels real in a way that pure CGI production design rarely achieves. The practical effects hold up across forty years because they were built to be real, not to simulate real.
Aliens is a film that conservatives have loved since it was released, and the reasons are not complicated. It is about a woman whose maternal instinct makes her the most dangerous person in any room she enters. It is about soldiers who earn the audience's respect through professionalism and sacrifice. It is about a corporate villain who is defeated not by bureaucracy or protest but by a mother with a power loader. The values encoded in those choices are not accidental. They are why the film endures.
