Bohemian Rhapsody presents a genuinely complicated case for a site like VirtueVigil.

On one hand, the film is unambiguously about Freddie Mercury, a bisexual man whose personal life involved same-sex relationships and whose death from AIDS is the biographical fact the film must eventually confront. You cannot make a movie about Freddie Mercury's life and not deal with this. The film does deal with it. The question is how.

Here is what's honest: the film does not celebrate Mercury's sexuality as liberating or progressive. It shows it as the source of his most significant personal damage. His relationship with Mary Austin is the most important human connection in his life, and the film makes that clear. He calls her his only true friend in a speech that the film presents as genuine rather than ironic. His move into the Bohemian excesses of the late 1970s and early 1980s, the parties, the crowd of hangers-on, the cocaine, the distance from his bandmates, is framed as decline rather than freedom. His return to Queen, his reconciliation with his family, his performance at Live Aid while managing illness: these are the film's climactic emotional beats. The arc is traditional: success leads to isolation leads to loss leads to redemption through loyalty and family.

Rami Malek's performance is the unqualified argument for seeing this film. He won the Oscar for it, and the win is deserved. This is full-body, full-soul inhabitation of a figure Malek clearly loves. When he walks onto the Live Aid stage in the film's finale, the audience's emotional response is earned by everything that preceded it. The recreation of the 1985 performance is extraordinarily precise: the camera angles, the audience interaction, the costume, the mustache, the teeth. It doesn't feel like a recreation. It feels like presence.

The film has real weaknesses. The first half is episodic almost to the point of feeling like a museum exhibit: here is when they wrote 'Bohemian Rhapsody,' here is when they fired their manager. The narrative only catches fire in the final act when Mercury's diagnosis arrives and the ticking clock is set. Anthony McCarten's screenplay takes dramatic license with the timeline that historians and Mercury's estate have pushed back on. The film places Mercury's HIV disclosure to the band before Live Aid when the historical record suggests it came after.

From a values perspective, Bohemian Rhapsody's traditional credit far outweighs its woke liability. The work ethic is real. These four men built something exceptional through relentless effort, genuine talent, and loyalty to each other through fifteen years of stress and disagreement. The immigrant work ethic embedded in the framing of Mercury's Parsi family background is present and positive. Bomi Bulsara, Freddie's father, is a figure the film treats with genuine respect rather than as an obstacle to be overcome. When Freddie reconciles with his family in the film's final sequences, the reconciliation is treated as grace rather than as capitulation.

The Live Aid finale is, regardless of your values, one of the great sequences in music cinema. It is an act of resurrection. See it for that.
