Our Verdict on Carrie
The 2026 Amazon adaptation of Carrie is a solid, respectful retelling of Stephen King's first novel that benefits enormously from the episodic format. Where the 1976 Brian De Palma film had to compress King's story into 98 minutes, this eight-episode series gives Carrie White's tragedy room to breathe. Samantha Sloyan is terrifying as Margaret White, finding notes of genuine, twisted love beneath the fanaticism that make her more disturbing than previous interpretations. Kaitlyn Dever as Carrie captures the character's desperate, heartbreaking desire to be normal - to have friends, to go to prom, to be loved - before the inevitable catastrophe. The series does not reinvent the wheel, but a wheel this well-made does not need reinventing.

Content Breakdown
Adult Viewer Insight
TV-MA for a reason. This is not for children or young teens. The series contains graphic violence including the infamous prom massacre depicted with modern production values, psychological horror involving severe child abuse and religious fanaticism, and intense depictions of bullying and social cruelty. Sexual content includes scenes of teen sexuality and an infamous locker room sequence. The central relationship is between a teenage girl and her violently abusive, religiously fanatical mother, creating sustained emotional distress throughout. Viewers sensitive to depictions of child abuse or religious trauma should approach with caution. Minimum age recommendation: 16+ with parental judgment.
Parental Guidance
TV-MA for a reason. This is not for children or young teens. The series contains graphic violence (the prom massacre is as brutal as any theatrical version), psychological horror involving child abuse, religious trauma, bullying, menstrual blood, and a deeply disturbing mother-daughter relationship. There is nudity in the locker room scene. The series normalizes telekinetic revenge as a response to cruelty - parents should be prepared to discuss why Carrie's rampage, while emotionally understandable, is not morally justified. For older teens (16+) who can handle horror, this is a valuable conversation starter about bullying, religious abuse, and how cruelty escalates. The series does not glorify what Carrie does, but it understands why she does it, and that distinction is worth a family discussion.
