Our Verdict on Digger
Digger is Alejandro G. Iñárritu's strangest film, and that is saying something from the director of Birdman. A satirical black comedy about an oil tycoon whose drilling triggers a global environmental catastrophe, the film wraps its polemic inside a play-within-a-film structure where Tom Cruise plays both the venal oil magnate Digger Rockwell and the actor Curtis Markson, who is performing him on stage. The result is genuinely ambitious - part Dr. Strangelove, part Synecdoche New York - and Cruise delivers a committed dual performance that is more interesting than anything he has done in a decade. But the film cannot quite decide whether it wants to be a howl of rage or a comedy of errors, and the mixed critical reception reflects that tonal wobble.

Content Breakdown
Adult Viewer Insight
Rated R for language, some violence, and thematic material. The film uses dark comedy and political satire to explore environmental catastrophe and government corruption. While the violence is mostly implied rather than graphic, the thematic content deals with serious real-world issues that may be heavier for younger viewers. Some scenes involve characters in peril from natural disasters and corporate negligence. Language is present but not gratuitous by modern standards. Best suited for viewers 16+ who can engage with the satirical elements.
Parental Guidance
Rated R for language, some violence, and thematic material. Not for children. The film deals with environmental catastrophe, government corruption, and contains satirical depictions of political figures including a president with colon cancer. There is no nudity or explicit sexual content. Older teens interested in political satire or Tom Cruise may find it worthwhile, but the metafictional structure and 129-minute runtime will test patience. Parents should know the film's environmental politics are overt and one-sided - this is not a balanced debate. A discussion about the difference between satire and propaganda would be valuable for teens mature enough to engage with the material.
