Our Verdict on Small Prophets
Small Prophets is the gentlest, most humane television series to emerge from Britain in 2026 - a six-episode comedy-drama from Mackenzie Crook (Detectorists) that does for alchemy what his previous work did for metal detecting: it treats an eccentric pursuit with complete seriousness and discovers profound things about what it means to be human. Pearce Quigley plays Michael Sleep, a man whose girlfriend Clea vanished seven years ago and who has spent the intervening time working in a DIY store, visiting his father in a care home, and, in his shed, creating tiny homunculi through alchemical recipes in the hope they will prophesy her return. The premise sounds twee, and in lesser hands it would be. Crook directs with the same patient, observational warmth he brought to Detectorists, and the result is a show that earns its emotions through accumulation of small, truthful moments. Michael Palin, in his first major television role in years, is heartbreaking as Michael's fading father. Lauren Patel brings sunshine as Kacey, Michael's coworker and the one person who believes in his project. The homunculi themselves, when they finally appear, are practical-effect marvels that feel handmade and real. The show was renewed for a second series in September 2026, and it deserves it.

Content Breakdown
Adult Viewer Insight
Parental Guidance
Appropriate for teens and up. The show contains no violence, no sexual content beyond references to a past romantic relationship, and only mild language. The thematic content deals with grief, loss, and loneliness in ways that are emotionally mature but never gratuitous. A scene involving a care home and an aging parent may resonate with families dealing with elder care. The alchemical elements are fantastical rather than occult - this is closer to Harry Potter than to anything genuinely esoteric. A lovely series for families with older teens to watch together and discuss: what does it mean to hope, to persist, and to love someone who is gone?
