Our Verdict on Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother
Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother is a gripping, beautifully acted crime drama that does something almost no American film attempts: it takes a devout Muslim protagonist seriously. Bassam Tariq, directing from his own script, brings the same ethnographic precision to Texas contract killing that he brought to his debut Mogul Mowgli - the world feels lived-in, the violence feels real rather than balletic, and the characters talk like actual humans rather than genre constructs. Mahershala Ali is the reason to see this film. His performance as a man trying to reconcile contract murder, Islamic faith, and sudden single fatherhood is a masterclass in internal conflict - he can communicate more with a glance during prayer than most actors can with a monologue. The supporting cast is stacked: John Cho brings weary decency as a fellow criminal with a conscience, Giancarlo Esposito does his signature coiled menace as law enforcement, and Tiffany Boone provides the film's moral compass. At 112 minutes, the pacing sags in the middle act when the parenting storyline threatens to overtake the crime plot entirely, and the ending pulls its punches in ways that feel more like studio notes than artistic conviction. But this is a real film - ambitious, flawed, and worth arguing about.

Content Breakdown
Adult Viewer Insight
Parental Guidance
Rated R for violence, language, and thematic content. The violence is realistic rather than stylized - shootings are sudden, ugly, and consequential. The film deals with the death of a spouse and the aftermath for children. Religious content includes Islamic prayer scenes that are portrayed respectfully. The moral complexity - a contract killer trying to be a good father - may be challenging for younger viewers who lack the framework to engage with moral ambiguity. Not for children. Older teens with an interest in film as art or in nuanced portrayals of faith in secular media will find it worth discussing, but parents should be prepared for conversations about whether a bad man doing good things is still a bad man.
