Our Verdict on Click

Click is a better film than it has any right to be, and the reason is that it has something real to say and is not ashamed to say it loudly.

Michael Newman is an architect grinding toward partner in a firm that keeps promising him rewards he never quite receives. He has a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale), two kids, a dog, and a suburban house, and he is absent from all of it because he is always working for the next thing. He finds a universal remote in a Bed, Bath, and Beyond that controls time: pause, fast forward, rewind, mute. At first he uses it to skip the annoying parts of life. Then the remote learns his preferences and starts fast-forwarding automatically. He blinks and finds himself at 60, estranged from his wife, having missed his children's childhoods, his father's final years, his dog's death, his entire actual life.

This is a Christmas Carol structure and the film is not embarrassed about it. Michael is Scrooge. The remote is the three spirits combined. The message is identical: you cannot buy back time, and the life you sacrifice for career success is the only life you had.

The film's emotional gut-punch comes in the third act. Michael fast-forwards into a future where he is obese, estranged, successful, and completely alone. His father has died. He missed it. His son is getting married and Michael has to drag himself from a hospital bed to attend. The relationship with his wife is gone. He gave everything to career advancement and the thing he advanced toward is ashes.

Christopher Walken's Morty, the otherworldly remote-vendor, watches Michael's tragedy with something like compassion. He is not a villain dispensing punishment. He is an observer who knows what Michael is choosing and cannot stop him. The film presents Morty as a kind of angel, though the film is careful not to make this explicitly religious. The message is clear enough without it: someone is watching, the choices matter, and time does not reverse.

The final sequence, where Michael in the rain outside his son's wedding finally breaks and begs his family not to make his mistake, is devastating. Kate Beckinsale crying over her ex-husband's collapsed body while he tries to communicate the one thing that matters before he dies is one of the more genuinely moving scenes in any Sandler film. The film earns this. It has built Michael's losses carefully and specifically.

Click has been dismissed as a manipulative tearjerker in a Sandler comedy wrapper. That dismissal is cynical. The film is manipulative in the way all morality tales are manipulative: it makes you feel the cost of a wrong choice until you understand viscerally why it is wrong. That is what stories are supposed to do.

The gender dynamics are conventional in the best sense: Michael has a wife who loves him and children who need him and a father who wants to spend time with him. He neglects all of them for work. The film is not making a feminist argument about work-life balance. It is making an argument about what men owe their families. A man who chooses career over family makes a catastrophic error. The film does not qualify this or complicate it. The error is the error.

For conservative audiences, Click is a gift. It is a mainstream Hollywood comedy that delivers a thoroughly traditional moral: the family you have is more valuable than the success you are chasing. Presence matters. Time is finite. Choose accordingly.
