Thirty years after its release, the Coen brothers' Fargo remains one of the most purely moral crime films ever made. Set in the snow-blanketed expanses of 1987 Minnesota, it tells the story of car salesman Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy), who hatches a scheme to have his wife kidnapped, collect ransom from his wealthy father-in-law, and split the take with two hired criminals. Everything goes wrong. The film cross-cuts Jerry's unraveling with the investigation led by Brainerd police chief Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand), who is seven months pregnant and the most competent person in any room.
Fargo works as a crime thriller, a black comedy, and a character study, but its deepest structure is a fable about the wages of sin. Jerry's greed triggers a chain of violence that consumes everyone it touches. By the end, bodies litter the Minnesota snow and the criminals have destroyed themselves through pride, stupidity, and venality. Marge, by contrast, represents everything they lack: competence born of diligence, decency grounded in a stable marriage, and the simple wisdom that ordinary life, a husband who makes you eggs, a baby on the way, is enough.
The film contains one mild ideological element worth noting: Marge's authority as a pregnant female police chief is never challenged or undercut. In 1996 this registered as progressive; today it registers as natural storytelling. The Coens treat her with such complete respect that the film never feels like it is making a point. There is no lecture, no flag-waving, no undermining of the male characters to make her look better. Marge is simply the best person for the job.
For families with older teens, Fargo is a masterclass in moral storytelling. The violence is stark and consequential, never glamorized. The contrast between Jerry's desperate grasping and Marge's quiet contentment is a sermon delivered with a wood chipper. Highly recommended.

She wants nothing more, and that contentment makes her not only happy but powerful, the one person in the film who cannot be corrupted, deceived, or defeated. The Coens, who are not exactly churchgoing moralists, have landed on a profoundly traditional insight: the Tenth Commandment is not arbitrary. Coveting what others have is the engine of every other sin Jerry commits. The film's final scene, Marge and Norm in bed, discussing his three-cent stamp, is one of the most quietly devastating affirmations of ordinary life in American cinema.
