Ghostbusters is the opposite of a woke trap. What you see in the first five minutes is what you get for 105 minutes: three male academics start a ghost-catching business, battle government bureaucracy, and save New York from supernatural destruction. The film's values are consistent throughout. The anti-government stance doesn't emerge late as a twist. The male competence is on display from the opening scene. That's the whole movie. Private competence asked to solve a problem that government cannot. A mayor wise enough to step aside. Bureaucratic overreach removed from the equation. Men who know what they're doing, going to do it.

1984 gave us a film that was genuinely funny, legitimately exciting, and completely coherent in its worldview. The Ghostbusters are scientists who lost their jobs and started a company. They built something. When the city needed them, they were ready because they'd been working.

Walter Peck is the villain because he can't let other people do things he doesn't control. He shuts down the containment unit with explicit warning that doing so would cause a disaster. He does it anyway because he has a warrant. Then ghosts flood out of the Sedgewick Hotel and into Manhattan, and Peck tries to blame the Ghostbusters. The mayor, to his credit, doesn't buy it for a second.

Bill Murray's Peter Venkman is one of American cinema's great characters because he's brilliant, confident, and doesn't care what anyone thinks of him. He pursues Dana Barrett because he wants to, backs off when she tells him to, and wins her eventually by being genuinely useful at a moment that matters. That's traditional courtship: a man with something to offer, offering it.

Harold Ramis is the intellectual anchor. Dan Aykroyd is the true believer. Ernie Hudson is the grounded working man who joins because it's a good job and stays because the work is real. The four of them together create something that feels like an actual team: different men with different strengths who'd rather work with each other than without.
