Henry Hill's narration turns corrosive long before the credits roll. The film is structured as a rise-and-fall morality play, and the fall is total. Anyone claiming the film glorifies organized crime without consequences watched a different movie.

Let's be direct: GoodFellas is one of the greatest American films ever made. That's not a controversial statement in 2026 and it wasn't controversial in 1990. The interesting question for VirtueVigil is what it actually says, morally, about the world it depicts. And the answer is complicated in the best possible way.
The film follows Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) from childhood in Brooklyn in the 1950s through his peak years as a mid-level mob associate, into his cocaine-fueled paranoid collapse, and finally into witness protection. The first hour is bracingly seductive. Henry narrates his own rise with genuine excitement. The camera moves like it wants to be there. The music is perfect. The food looks incredible. Scorsese gives you the life before he takes it away, and he does this on purpose.
By the time you reach the final third, the party is over and has been over for a while. Henry is a wreck. The people around him are dropping. Jimmy Conway (Robert De Niro, doing some of the coldest work of his career) is eliminating his Lufthansa heist crew one by one because dead men don't collect shares. Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci, in a performance so terrifying it won the Oscar and deserved to) is pure id in a suit, capable of killing someone for looking at him wrong. And then he gets killed, suddenly, off-screen, for breaking the rules one time too many.
That's the actual moral of GoodFellas. Not a speech. Not a title card. Just an off-screen execution and Henry Hill moving a new family into a new suburb, eating egg noodles instead of pasta, watching his life shrink to the size of a witness protection dossier. The film calls it out in Henry's own voice: 'I'm an average nobody. I get to live the rest of my life like a schnook.' That's the judgment. It's withering.
The film's relationship to traditional values is subtle but genuine. The mob world Scorsese depicts is built on codes: loyalty, hierarchy, respect for those above you. These codes are perversions of legitimate traditional values, which is precisely what makes the film interesting. The mob version of family dinner comes with the understanding that the man carving the turkey might have someone's hands in a meat grinder the next morning. The mob version of loyalty includes Jimmy Conway killing everyone who knows about the Lufthansa job. The codes exist. They're just operating in a context that corrupts them completely.
Karen Hill (Lorraine Bracco) is often cited as a proto-feminist character because she has an interior life and agency. I don't read her that way at all. She's a woman seduced by power and money who makes choices and lives with consequences. Her narration is honest about her own culpability in ways that feel more morally complex than most contemporary female characters who are simply declared right by default. She wanted the life. She got the life. She stayed in the life longer than she should have. The film doesn't excuse her for this.
Pesci's Tommy DeVito is the film's most important character for understanding what it's actually saying. Tommy is violence without loyalty, ambition without code, appetite without restraint. He kills Billy Batts for a personal insult during a truce. He kills Spider for talking back. He kills without permission and without purpose. And when he gets called to his own button ceremony, the ones above him use the occasion to execute him for the Batts killing. The hierarchy has rules. Tommy refused to follow them. The hierarchy responded. This is not progressive messaging.

GoodFellas, The Departed, Gangs of New York, and Killers of the Flower Moon all demonstrate a director who lets moral complexity speak for itself rather than inserting ideological messaging. GoodFellas in particular is bracingly non-preachy about its subject matter. Scorsese trusts the audience to draw conclusions. That trust is itself a conservative artistic instinct, even if the man holding the camera votes differently.

Conservative adults who haven't seen GoodFellas in a while should revisit it with fresh eyes. What Scorsese is doing is more interesting than either the 'it glorifies crime' camp or the 'it condemns crime' camp will admit. The film presents a world built on masculine codes of loyalty, hierarchy, and honor. It then shows, in meticulous detail, what happens when those codes operate without a legitimate moral foundation. The result is corruption, betrayal, and destruction. This is not an argument against loyalty, hierarchy, and honor. It's an argument for applying those values in contexts that can sustain them. Henry Hill's tragedy is specifically that the codes he learned as a kid, work hard, earn respect, be loyal to your crew, were real codes. They just applied to a criminal organization instead of a legitimate one. His skills, his hustle, his loyalty, his ability to read a room: all of these would have made him successful in almost any other context. The waste of a capable man in a corrupt institution is genuinely sad, and Scorsese treats it as such. The film also has something important to say about consequences.
