What you're watching is a story about a lonely boy who discovers he belongs somewhere, told with warmth and craft and real feeling.
The setup is known to everyone by now. Harry Potter has lived in a cupboard under the stairs for ten years. He's eleven. His parents died when he was a baby, and his aunt and uncle have raised him with a particular brand of cruelty: not physical abuse, but systematic erasure. He is not allowed to matter. Alan Rickman finds something genuinely complex in Snape even in this first appearance, a feat more impressive in retrospect than it seemed at the time.
The woke signals in The Sorcerer's Stone are minimal. Hermione is depicted as the most academically capable of the trio, which some read as a feminist statement. It functions more like an accurate depiction of one kind of gifted child: the one who reads ahead of the class and can't stop showing it. She is not presented as superior to Harry and Ron as people; she's superior to everyone at memorizing spellbooks. That's a different thing. The Dursleys represent a type of suburban small-mindedness that Rowling clearly found contemptible, but the film is not anti-family. It's anti-cruelty, which is not the same.
