Our Verdict on Man of Steel

There is a moment in Man of Steel where Clark Kent, maybe 12 years old, is overwhelmed in school by his newly awakening X-ray vision and super-hearing. The walls dissolve. Every conversation, every heartbeat, every layer of flesh and bone is visible to him. He retreats to a closet and curls up against the wall, completely undone. His mother finds him there.

That is the scene Zack Snyder built a Superman movie around. Not the flying. Not the punching. The kid in the closet who cannot turn his brain off.

Man of Steel is the most theologically ambitious Superman film ever made, and it is not close. The Christ architecture is systematic and intentional: Jor-El sends his only son to Earth with the hope that he will one day save humanity. Clark spends his twenties as an anonymous laborer, a wanderer, invisible among the people he is slowly preparing to protect. He submits to human authority even when it would be trivially easy to refuse. He reveals himself at 33. His sacrifice at the end of the film is the sacrifice of every secret he has ever kept.

That Snyder chose to load this much spiritual freight into a superhero movie is remarkable. That it mostly works is more remarkable still.

Kevin Costner's Jonathan Kent is the film's secret emotional engine. The man understands something that most superhero films' father figures do not: that Clark's greatest threat is not Krypton or General Zod. It is being revealed before the world is ready to receive him. Every conversation Jonathan has with Clark is about patience, concealment, and the gap between what Clark is capable of and what the world will allow him to be. When he dies in the tornado, choosing death over letting Clark expose himself, it is the most disturbing parenting decision in any superhero film. It is also completely in character. Costner makes you believe it. He will stay in that memory a long time.

Henry Cavill does something difficult here. He plays Clark Kent / Superman as a man who has spent his entire life learning to be invisible, and he does not abandon that quality when he puts on the suit. This Clark does not perform heroism. He commits to it, at obvious cost, with obvious weight. The gladness that comes naturally to a character like Tony Stark or Steve Rogers is absent. What you get instead is something closer to duty. It is a less immediately likable interpretation. It is a more honest one.

Michael Shannon's Zod is not a villain. He is a soldier who has one mission and has been built, genetically, to carry it out. Krypton engineered its people for specific societal roles. Zod was engineered to protect Krypton. Krypton is gone. He is still protecting it, from instinct he cannot override. Shannon plays this with complete seriousness and zero camp. The result is an antagonist who is genuinely frightening because he is not evil in any traditional sense. He is a purpose-built weapon operating after its mission has dissolved, unable to stop.

The third act is where the film's critics found their ammunition: the scale of destruction in Metropolis is enormous, and Clark does not appear to prioritize minimizing civilian casualties the way a Christopher Reeve Superman would. It is a legitimate critique. But it is worth noting what the scene is actually depicting: a fight between two beings of near-equal power, neither of whom can fly to an empty field to finish it because the other one would not permit it. The destruction is not accidental. It is the cost of fighting Zod where Zod is willing to fight. Whether the film adequately grapples with that cost is a reasonable question. Batman v Superman (2016) would spend considerable time on it.

The neck-break ending, Clark snapping Zod's neck to save a family about to be incinerated by his heat vision, generated the most debate of any single scene in the DCEU. It is a choice that Snyder and Goyer defend on the grounds that it was the only available option and that it destroys Clark emotionally. Henry Cavill's reaction in the immediate aftermath sells that. Clark does not stand over the body with satisfaction. He collapses and screams. The weight of what he just did is immediate and visible. That is not the work of a film comfortable with what its hero just did. It is the work of a film that understands the moral cost.

Man of Steel is not a perfect film. The tonal severity is unrelenting and allows for almost no lightness. Lois Lane's arc feels slightly underdeveloped compared to the investment in Clark's. The first-act structure, which jumps back and forth in time between Clark's childhood and his adult drifting period, takes some adjustment.

But as a vision of what Superman could mean, of what the story of a man with godlike power choosing to serve rather than dominate actually costs its protagonist, Man of Steel is unmatched in the genre. The Christian symbols are not decoration. They are the architecture. And the architecture holds.
