Monsters, Inc. is a film about a creature who discovers he would rather protect a child than frighten her, and that single instinct upends an entire industry. That is as traditional a story as Pixar has ever told. Sulley begins as a top-performer in a system built on fear extraction, and the film takes him, and the audience, through the recognition that the system is wrong, not because the system is an evil corporation in the abstract, but because there is something more important than efficiency and profit: the protection of the innocent. When Sulley holds Boo and makes her laugh, the entire power grid surges brighter than a scream ever made it, and the film's thesis lands fully: love is stronger than fear, and a protector is better than a predator. The corrupt CEO, Waternoose, is not a cartoon capitalist villain; he is a desperate patriarch who has traded the well-being of children for the survival of the company, and the film draws a clear line: that trade is evil. Randy, the scheming competitor who wants to kidnap children for scream extraction, is a coward and a bully, and the film dispatches him neatly. Mike Wazowski provides the comic relief, but underneath the one-liners is a loyal best friend who stands by Sulley even when his career, and his girlfriend Celia, are at risk. The film's visual imagination is still dazzling after two decades: the door vault chase is one of the great action sequences in animation. But what gives Monsters, Inc. its staying power is the relationship between Sulley and Boo, a giant furry monster who becomes a father figure to a toddler, and the completely unironic, unapologetic warmth of that bond.
