He came from a good family. He believed in something. What he finds in the jungle of Vietnam is not what he believed in.
Oliver Stone served in Vietnam. He volunteered just like Taylor. He was decorated for valor. He saw things he has been processing in film ever since. Platoon is his testimony, and whatever you think of Stone's other films, his political grandstanding and his conspiracy theories and his sympathy for authoritarian leftists, his Vietnam testimony has the weight of lived experience behind it. The film's central structure is simple and devastating. Taylor finds himself caught between two sergeant figures representing opposing philosophies. He kills Barnes not as an anti-war statement but as justice. As the restoration of a moral order that Barnes violated.
