In 1987, it looked like a Schwarzenegger vehicle. He was the biggest action star in the world, coming off The Terminator and Commando and Predator's pre-release positioning leaned into that. What the film actually is, once you watch it, is a horror-survival story that uses Schwarzenegger's physical persona as a setup before systematically dismantling it. Dutch is the best operator in the jungle. His team is exceptional. And none of that matters against what's hunting them.
John McTiernan understood that the film's power comes from inversion. The first twenty minutes establish the team's competence in a kinetic guerrilla assault that would serve as the climax of a lesser film. They are very, very good at what they do. Then the alien enters the equation and their training becomes nearly irrelevant. The movie becomes a horror film. Then, in its final act, it becomes a one-man survival thriller. Dutch strips himself of his weapons and uses camouflage and the environment to level the field. Intelligence and adaptability over technology and firepower. That's a traditional premise about individual resourcefulness. It's also just good storytelling.
The team McTiernan assembled for this movie is not accidental. Schwarzenegger is the center. But Carl Weathers brings genuine weight as Dillon, the CIA operative whose betrayal of Dutch's trust is the film's one significant moral complication. Jesse Ventura's Blain is physical comedy as action movie performance. He chews tobacco and calls his minigun Ol' Painless. He's the first member of the team to die, which is the film's signal that the rules have changed. Bill Duke's Mac has the film's most intense grief response to a teammate's death. Sonny Landham's Billy walks away from the group to face the Predator alone, knife in hand. That scene is never explained and it doesn't need to be. You understand it.
The alien design still holds up. The Predator, under all the camouflage and armor, is a hunter culture's apex predator: it takes skulls and spines as trophies, it releases unarmed prey rather than killing them, it activates its self-destruct rather than be taken prisoner. That last detail is significant. The Predator has a code. Dutch recognizes it. The film's climax is two combatants who respect each other's capabilities meeting in a fair fight. That's a traditional honor-in-combat framework and it gives the ending moral clarity.
The CIA subplot, Dillon lying to Dutch about the nature of the mission, is the film's concession to 1980s action-thriller conventions. The government is not fully trustworthy. But the film frames this as individual betrayal (Dillon made a choice) rather than systemic critique (the system itself is corrupt). Dillon redeems himself in the film's midpoint action sequence by dying while trying to save a teammate. The institutional distrust is background texture, not the film's argument.
What Predator is, at its core, is a film about men who are very good at their jobs encountering something they cannot outgun or outmuscle, and responding by refusing to die without a fight. Dutch's final trap is built from mud, rocks, fire, and improvised primitive weapons. He strips back to the essentials. There's something almost philosophical about it. The technology fails. The military hierarchy has been removed. What's left is one man's ingenuity and will to survive. The film doesn't editorialize about that. It just shows you.
Predator: Badlands (2025) is the latest entry in the franchise. However the new film turns out, the original holds its place. Thirty-eight years later, the jungle sequences still create tension. The Predator is still genuinely unsettling. Dutch's final confrontation still works. That's how you know a film was built on something real.

TRADITIONAL. McTiernan's peak-era filmography is about as ideologically clean as 1980s Hollywood got: Predator (1987), Die Hard (1988), The Hunt for Red October (1990), Last Action Hero (1993). His films celebrate competence, male camaraderie, and individuals solving problems through skill and nerve. No gender politics, no institutional critique as progressive messaging, no identity signaling. He understood what action movies are for and he made them at a very high level.John McTiernan directed two of the most iconic action films ever made back to back: Predator and Die Hard. Both films share structural DNA: a highly competent man, isolated from backup, stripped progressively of his technological advantages, forced to survive on wit and adaptability. McTiernan's direction on Predator is economical in the best sense. He spends the first act establishing the team's competence in a conventional military action sequence. Then the film changes genres on you. The guerrilla assault becomes a hunting narrative becomes a survival film. McTiernan manages the tonal transitions without losing the audience. He also shoots the jungle of Palenque, Mexico as genuinely threatening, not as an exotic backdrop. The environment feels like a character. It is hostile to these men whether or not there's an alien in it. His subsequent legal troubles (wiretapping conviction) don't touch the work. The films stand on their own terms.
