The film earns the right to go dark, and the opening sequence uses that earnestness as the foundation for everything that follows.
Cable's motivation is equally traditional. He comes from the future specifically to kill the boy who will eventually murder his wife and daughter. His family is his reason. He is not a military machine or an ideological weapon. He is a father who has already lost everything and is trying to prevent it. Josh Brolin plays this with complete sincerity, which is the correct choice. Cable surrounded by Deadpool's chaos works because Brolin refuses to wink at the camera. He believes what Cable believes.

Negasonic Teenage Warhead's relationship with Yukio is introduced casually and without commentary. They hold hands. Yukio waves at Wade. The film doesn't make it a topic. What's accurate is that the relationship is present, it is LGBTQ in nature, and it is treated as entirely unremarkable by the narrative. That's the woke-adjacent element. X-Force is a brilliant sequence. Wade assembles a team of ostensibly powerful mutants, they deploy, and they all die immediately to physics and circumstance. It's the film's best pure comedy beat and it works because Leitch commits to the brutality of the deaths without softening them.
David Leitch's direction is strong throughout. The action sequences are significantly better choreographed and photographed than the first film's. The convoy fight is one of the better set pieces in the Fox X-Men era. Cable and Deadpool's fight in the burning orphanage has spatial clarity that most superhero films abandon in favor of quick-cutting chaos.
The film's bottom line: it has genuine traditional emotional content (grief, sacrifice, protecting the innocent, paternal love) embedded in a progressive institutional framework and surrounded by extremely adult crude humor and LGBTQ normalization.
