Our Verdict on Scarface

Scarface is a great film that is telling you a lie about itself.

The lie is this: the film claims to be a cautionary tale about the self-destruction that follows greed and excess. Tony Montana wants the world and everything in it, gets it, and is destroyed by it. Lesson delivered. But for 150 of its 170 minutes, Scarface makes Tony Montana look cooler than anyone you have ever met. Brian De Palma and cinematographer John Alonzo photograph his mansion, his cars, his suits, his cocaine mountain, and his pool like they are the most desirable things on earth. Giorgio Moroder's synth score makes every scene feel like the apex of glamorous experience. And Al Pacino plays Tony with a ferocious charisma that makes you root for him even as he does the things you should not root for.

That is the film's problem and its fascination, and it is why Scarface has become one of the most culturally persistent films of the past half century while also being a film that does not, on honest analysis, say what it claims to say.

Oliver Stone wrote the script while using cocaine heavily, and it shows. Tony Montana is Stone's id at full volume: an immigrant outsider who looked at America's capitalism and concluded correctly that its rules exist to keep people like him outside, and who decided to ignore those rules. Stone's target is the American economic system. His argument is that the difference between Tony Montana and a legitimate Miami businessman is not moral but procedural. Both men want to accumulate wealth and power. Tony is honest about the methods.

This is a woke reading of the American Dream, and it is embedded in the film's structure. The film's most explicitly political moment comes when Tony confronts a restaurant full of rich people and screams at them: 'You need people like me. You need people like me so you can point your fingers and say that's the bad guy.' He is, in Oliver Stone's moral universe, correct. The legitimate economy produced him by excluding him. He took the available route. The system that condemns him is the same system that created him.

There are genuine traditional elements in Scarface, and they matter. The most important is family. Tony Montana's relationship with his mother and sister is the film's moral anchor, such as it is. His love for Gina is possessive and complicated, shading into something the film hints at but does not quite name. But the love itself is real. He wanted to bring his mother out of poverty. He wanted to protect Gina from the world he inhabits. When Manny, his best friend, secretly marries Gina, Tony kills him out of jealousy and then kills Gina when she tells him what he's done. The destruction of family is the final cost of Tony's choices, and it lands with genuine moral weight.

The other traditional element is consequences. Tony does die at the end. He does reap what he sowed. His cocaine addiction destroys him before the gunmen do. The final sequence, Tony defending his fortress alone after driving away everyone who cared about him, is genuinely tragic and not ironic about its tragedy. Say what you will about Scarface's glorification problem: the film does not let Tony Montana win. He loses everything, including the things that actually mattered.

But the film's trad signals are outweighed by its structural problems. A film can have consequences without having moral clarity, and Scarface does not have moral clarity. The difference between The Godfather and Scarface is that The Godfather mourns what crime does to family. Scarface mourns Tony's fall but is unable to stop finding him magnificent. The 170-minute runtime is largely spent in admiration of the man it claims to be warning against.
