Six is not a woke trap. It wears its ideology on its sleeve from the opening number. The first song, Ex-Wives, announces the entire thesis: six women defined by a man, about to reclaim their voices. The competition conceit exists so the queens can be introduced as contestants in a grief olympics, and the resolution is that they reject the game and declare they do not need Henry's love. It is competent, confident, and completely on-message. The music is legitimately good, which is what makes it persuasive rather than merely preachy. Marlow and Moss are talented songwriters, and the pastiche of pop styles from Beyonce to Britney to Adele is well executed. The problem is not the craft. It is the ideology. The historical wives are stripped of their actual substance and recast as interchangeable trauma avatars whose only meaningful choice is to reject the man who defined them. Catherine of Aragon's real story is one of deep Catholic faith and loyalty to her marriage vows; the show flattens her into a woman who was simply done wrong. Katherine Howard, the actual teenage victim of sexual abuse, is played for laughs until the show pivots to tragedy, then used as a cudgel. The show's imagined ending, in which all six wives live happily ever after having never married Henry, is the tell. It is a fantasy of a world without marriage, without the family, without the historical reality these women actually inhabited. That is not reclaiming their stories. It is erasing them and replacing them with a pop-feminist fable. As a filmed stage capture it is clean and watchable. As ideology it is louder than the music.
