Jane Schoenbrun has made a film that knows exactly what it is and cares more about being celebrated at Cannes than about telling a story anyone outside a film festival would want to watch. Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is the kind of movie that arrives with a thesis statement and never lets you forget it: the slasher genre is a closet for trans identity, and reclaiming it is an act of liberation. The problem is not that the thesis is wrong or right. The problem is that the film refuses to be anything other than thesis.

Hannah Einbinder commits fully to Kris, a filmmaker who is insufferable in ways the film seems uncertain about. Are we supposed to find her pretentiousness charming? Is her exploitation of a traumatized former actress supposed to read as romantic? The film cannot decide, and the ambiguity does not feel intentional so much as unexamined. Kris's arc is supposed to be about learning to enjoy sex after transition, but the film never makes you care whether she does or not. The climactic scene, in which Kris achieves orgasm as Little Death spears her and Billy simultaneously, is photographed with more attention to visual composition than to emotional consequence. It is striking. It is also empty.
