Scary Movie (2026) is not a good movie in any conventional sense. It is a loud, crude, aggressively stupid 96-minute assault on taste, logic, and the human attention span. It is also the most ideologically interesting comedy released by a major studio this year, and accidentally the most traditionally-grounded Scary Movie since the original.

The film's meta-narrative is more compelling than its actual narrative. After a 25-year absence, the Wayans family returned to the franchise they created, having walked away after Scary Movie 2 when Dimension Films wanted to take the series in directions they opposed. Scary Movies 3, 4, and 5 were made without them, each one further from the original's spirit. This film is their answer: a 'spiritual sequel' that ignores the intervening films and positions itself as the true heir to the first two. The plot concerns a Ghostface-style killer murdering the children and associates of the original characters, with the young new cast seemingly being positioned as the franchise's future. The young characters explicitly say they want to 'take over the Scary Movie franchise from the legacy characters.' The film's final scene has Cindy, Brenda, Shorty, and Ray tying up the would-be replacements and leaving them to burn to death in a house, declaring that no one will take the franchise from them.

Read that again. The Wayans family made a $30 million studio comedy whose actual thesis is: the new generation doesn't get to steal what we built. The creators own the creation. The originals survive. That is not a progressive message. That is an argument for creative patrimony delivered at the end of a movie where someone gets killed by a ghost in a K-Pop animated sequence.

Along the way, the film takes swipes at virtually every woke piety available to a 2026 Hollywood production. The nonbinary character (Dei, Brenda's child) is stabbed to death on a subway by Ghostface and fellow passengers who are 'fed up with their liberal perspectives.' The transgender character (Jess, the sheriff's son) is murdered offscreen. Gail Hailstorm undergoes a grotesque cosmetic procedure to 'look young again' that ends with her alternate self being injected with toxic goo and killed, a sequence that reads as a direct mockery of Hollywood's obsession with youth and bodily reinvention. The young heroes who believe the franchise belongs to them by generational right are the villains, and they are punished for their presumption with death by immolation.

Is any of this high-minded? No. It's a Scary Movie. The jokes about bodily functions, sex, and celebrity cameos (Kai Cenat is murdered on a livestream) outnumber any coherent ideological statements about ten to one. But the film's id, its unconscious set of assumptions about what is worth mocking and what is worth valuing, is unmistakably traditional. The legacy characters are the heroes. The family that built something together is the unit worth preserving. The kids who think they deserve a turn because they exist are the punchline. Ray may renounce homosexuality for a joke, but the joke lands because the film takes for granted that a man and woman raising children together is the natural order being restored, not transgressed.

The film is too stupid to be called a conservative polemic, and too self-aware in its stupidity to be dismissed as accidental. What it is, is a Wayans family comedy made by people who have been in Hollywood long enough to see every trend come and go, and who have decided not to take any of them seriously. That instinct, to mock everything and respect nothing except the family that made you, turns out to produce a more traditionally-grounded film than any number of self-consciously 'anti-woke' productions. The Scary Movie franchise was never ideological. It was always just funny. In 2026, just being funny without genuflecting to the reigning orthodoxies is itself a kind of rebellion.
