The 20 Most Woke Movies of 2026 (So Far), Ranked by VirtueVigil

From The Moment to Butterfly Dreams, we ranked the 20 most ideologically aggressive films and shows of 2026. Every score backed by VirtueVigil's dual-metric methodology. Ranked most woke to least woke.

2026 is barely half over and the ideological machinery of Hollywood is already running at full capacity. The first six months alone delivered a mockumentary in which Charli XCX turns "Brat Summer" into a 103-minute progressive manifesto, an Australian horror film named after the most contested book of the Bible, an HBO medical drama that turned its Second Amendment episode into an ICE episode, a Boots Riley socialist heist comedy that treats shoplifting as proletarian heroism, and an $80 million feminist gothic romance in which the Bride of Frankenstein literally screams "Me too!" into the camera.

We reviewed over 170 films and shows from 2026 so far. This list ranks the 20 most ideologically aggressive among them, from most woke to least. Every entry links to the full VirtueVigil review with complete scoring breakdowns. The margin, tradScore minus wokeScore, reflects how thoroughly progressive ideology dominates the work. A -27 margin means the film's woke content overwhelms its traditional content by 27 points on our 100-point dual scale.

What makes 2026 distinctive so far: the ideology has gotten louder, not quieter. Last year's most woke entries at least tried to wrap their messaging in genre conventions or prestige aesthetics. This year's entries are increasingly unapologetic about it. A24 alone distributed four films on this list. HBO and Netflix each contributed multiple entries. Horror, the genre where traditional audiences once found refuge from politics, produced five of the top fifteen. The walls between entertainment and advocacy did not thin in 2026. They disappeared entirely. Ranked from most woke to least woke.

#1 (Most Woke): The Moment (2026)

STRONGLY WOKE MARGIN: -27 WOKE

Genre: Comedy • Platform: Theatrical • Distributor: A24

The Moment is less a movie than a 103-minute manifesto dressed in compelling cinematography and genuine comedic talent. A $4 million mockumentary in which Charli XCX -- pop music's reigning progressive icon -- produces, co-writes, and stars in a fictional version of her own real life, distributed by A24, the most ideologically consistent prestige label in American cinema. Every male character exists to be wrong. Every female figure exists to be right. The ideology is not delivered with a sledgehammer; it is delivered with style and wit, which is what makes it worth taking seriously as a cultural document. Director Aidan Zamiri, making his feature debut, is genuinely talented. The film looks great. It is also the most aggressively progressive film in our database of over 700 reviews. At -27, The Moment is the most woke title of 2026 so far.

#2: The Pitt: Season 2 (2026)

STRONGLY WOKE MARGIN: -20 WOKE

Genre: Medical Drama • Platform: HBO Max

The Pitt is genuinely good at its job. Noah Wyle is exceptional. The real-time structure creates genuine tension most medical dramas have abandoned. The ensemble is strong. All of that is true, and all of it sits inside a show that has decided its most important job is to be a platform for progressive political advocacy. Season 1 made gun violence the centerpiece of its most high-profile episode with staff delivering coordinated four-person expositions on Second Amendment policy while stabilizing patients. Season 2 escalated to an undocumented immigrant story where the staff's response is unified condemnation of ICE enforcement. Forbes called it tackling "the politics of fear." Reddit noted "the dialog is unnatural and clunky when talking about social justice issues." The show never names a political party. It does not need to. Conservative viewers who find prestige medical drama appealing will be pulled toward it by its quality and then hit with messaging they find deeply objectionable.

#3: Leviticus (2026)

STRONGLY WOKE MARGIN: -20 WOKE

Genre: Horror / Romance / Coming-of-Age • Platform: Theatrical / Streaming • Director: Adrian Chiarella

Leviticus is a competent horror film with a very clear ideological mission: to argue that religious communities opposed to homosexuality are not just wrong, but monstrous. The setup is familiar coming-of-age territory, but the film's title is a direct provocation -- it is the biblical book that contains the prohibitions on homosexuality that conservative Christians most commonly cite. The film's argument is that this book, this belief, this community, is the source of the horror. The horror mechanics around the supernatural entity are genuinely well-constructed. Joe Bird and Stacy Clausen have real chemistry. Mia Wasikowska delivers the film's most uncomfortable performance as a mother whose love does not stop her from reporting her son. The 95% RT score tells you everything about the critical establishment's reception. For VirtueVigil's readers: Leviticus is well-made propaganda. The horror elements are effective. The performances are strong. And the film's argument, that Christian communities opposed to homosexuality are summoners of literal evil, is the entire point.

#4: I Love Boosters (2026)

WOKE MARGIN: -19 WOKE

Genre: Crime Comedy / Satire • Platform: Theatrical • Director: Boots Riley • Stars: Keke Palmer, Naomi Ackie, LaKeith Stanfield, Demi Moore

Eight years after the Marxist nightmare comedy Sorry to Bother You, Boots Riley returns with a film that argues wealth redistribution is morally correct, individual ownership of property is illegitimate when the wealthy possess it, and capitalism is the central organizing crime of contemporary American life. Keke Palmer is excellent as Corvette, the leader of a crew of shoplifters who target a fashion executive who stole their designs and built a luxury empire without compensation. Riley is not hiding anything. The film's logic, stated outright in its final act, is that the wealthy executive's wealth is stolen in the first place, and taking it back is not theft but justice. Shoplifters are proletarian heroes. It is a $20 million socialist comedy executed with genuine formal invention. The VVWS score reflects exactly how accomplished and exactly how committed the film is.

#5: Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass (2026)

WOKE MARGIN: -16 WOKE

Genre: Comedy / Adventure / Satire • Platform: Theatrical • Director: David Wain • Stars: Zoey Deutch, Jon Hamm, John Slattery

A road-trip comedy that runs its horny premise into the ground, David Wain's latest delivers consistent laughs at the cost of any moral coherence whatsoever. Zoey Deutch commits fully as Gail, a Kansas hairdresser whose journey to Los Angeles to sleep with Jon Hamm becomes a vortex of briefcase mix-ups, hairdresser-convention shootouts, and celebrity cameos that range from inspired to puzzling. The film is funny. It is also a 94-minute advertisement for treating infidelity as self-discovery, and anyone watching with ideological antennae up will have them snapping within the first five minutes. The tradScore of 1.55 is among the lowest in our database, reflecting a film that has essentially no traditional moral content to offset its sex-as-liberation thesis.

#6: The Drama (2026)

WOKE MARGIN: -14 WOKE

Genre: Dark Comedy / Romance / Drama • Platform: Theatrical • Director: Kristoffer Borgli • Stars: Zendaya, Robert Pattinson

Zendaya is extraordinary. Robert Pattinson's work is committed and technically impressive. These facts cannot offset a film whose central project is making a would-be mass murderer sympathetic without consequence. The premise: a woman confesses, during a parlor game of mutual darkness, that she once planned to murder children at her school. The film processes this revelation entirely as a relationship anxiety her fiance must integrate into his understanding of who she is. There is no call to the police. No confrontation with the families who would have been destroyed. Tom Mauser, whose son Daniel was killed at Columbine, has spoken publicly against the film, saying it humanizes and normalizes school shooters. He is right, and his objection deserves more weight than the 79% Rotten Tomatoes score that greets it.

#7: The Bride! (2026)

WOKE MARGIN: -14 WOKE

Genre: Gothic Romance / Horror • Platform: Theatrical (IMAX) • Director: Maggie Gyllenhaal • Stars: Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, Annette Bening, Penelope Cruz

Maggie Gyllenhaal's $80 million sophomore effort reimagines the Bride of Frankenstein as a feminist gothic romance in which the protagonist literally screams "Me too! Me too!" in the climax and growls "female rage" repeatedly until it becomes a punchline. The film is an auteur-driven passion project, not a corporate woke product, and Gyllenhaal's commitment is genuine. But the feminist messaging is so aggressive that even progressive outlets pushed back: IndieWire called it "a wokified, Joker-fied feminist opera," Reason.com called it "maximally cringe," and the C+ CinemaScore from opening-night audiences suggests the public agreed. With an $8-10 million domestic opening against an $80 million budget, it is one of the biggest commercial failures of 2026. The craft is undeniable. The production design and costumes are stunning. The ideology is equally undeniable and far less restrained.

#8: Nightbitch (2026)

WOKE MARGIN: -14 WOKE

Genre: Drama • Platform: Hulu

Nightbitch opens as a character study of maternal exhaustion that earns genuine empathy for roughly its first half. Then the ideological framing takes over. What begins as personal struggle becomes systemic accusation. The husband evolves from an imperfect partner into a symbol of patriarchal indifference. The supernatural elements shift from metaphor to manifesto. By the final act, the story stops asking the audience to empathize and starts demanding they agree. The performances are grounded and the frustration feels earned, which makes the ideological pivot more effective -- and for VirtueVigil readers, more worth being aware of going in.

#9: The Invite (2026)

WOKE MARGIN: -14 WOKE

Genre: Comedy / Dramedy • Platform: Theatrical (A24) • Director: Olivia Wilde • Stars: Seth Rogen, Olivia Wilde, Penelope Cruz, Edward Norton

The best-directed film Olivia Wilde has made. A brittle, frequently hilarious dinner-party dramedy that doubles as an autopsy of modern marriage. It is also a film that assumes, from its opening epigraph to its closing moments, that traditional marriage is a prison, monogamy is a slow death, and the bumbling, emotionally stunted husband is the primary problem. The filmmaking is superb. The ideology is unmistakable. The film opens with an Oscar Wilde quotation: "One should always be in love. That is the reason one should never marry." The Invite is not a polemic. It is too well-made to be reduced to a political tract. But it earns its 96% on Rotten Tomatoes through genuine craft and earns its ideological score through the quiet, confident assumptions that underwrite every scene.

#10: Ready or Not 2: Here I Come (2026)

WOKE MARGIN: -13 WOKE

Genre: Horror / Dark Comedy / Thriller • Platform: Theatrical • Directors: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett • Stars: Samara Weaving, Kathryn Newton, Sarah Michelle Gellar

The sequel expands the franchise from one murderous family to a full Council of six elite families competing for a demonic High Seat of ultimate power. Without ambiguity or apology, this is an anti-tradition film. The Council's power structure is built on inherited wealth, ritual sacrifice, and blood oaths passed down through generations. Grace explicitly rejects a marriage-as-loophole deal that would give her safety because accepting it would mean perpetuating the system. The council families span multiple ethnicities and nationalities, removing any defense that the critique targets one demographic. Elite corruption is coded as universal. The anti-elite, anti-tradition framework is not background texture. It is the franchise premise, the plot engine, and the emotional payoff.

#11: Girls Like Girls (2026)

WOKE MARGIN: -13 WOKE

Genre: Romance / Coming-of-Age / Drama • Platform: Theatrical • Director: Hayley Kiyoko • Stars: Maya da Costa, Myra Molloy

Girls Like Girls is exactly what it advertises itself to be. Hayley Kiyoko built a decade of her career on this story: the 2015 song, the music video, the 2023 novel. Now the film. This project did not arrive from cinematic ambition stretching beyond her established brand. It arrived from complete ideological conviction. Kiyoko knows who her audience is. Her audience knows who she is. The film exists to serve that relationship. The story centers on Coley, 17, grieving her mother in rural Oregon and discovering new, confusing feelings for Sonya. As filmmaking, it is competent. The Guardian called it "a precious and predictable yawn-a-thon." The Hollywood Reporter noted the plot is "so simple that for long stretches it barely counts as a plot at all." The film prioritizes emotional texture over narrative architecture and ideological affirmation over complexity.

#12: Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 (2026)

WOKE MARGIN: -12 WOKE

Genre: Superhero / Drama • Platform: Disney+

Polygon called it "Marvel's most political show ever." That description is accurate, and it is not a compliment from this corner. Wilson Fisk won the New York City mayoral race on an anti-vigilante platform at the end of Season 1. Season 2 picks up with Fisk's Anti-Vigilante Task Force already operational and his draconian "Safer Streets Initiative" targeting communities in ways that are unmistakably coded as parallels to real-world policing and immigration enforcement policies. The show that once grounded itself in Catholic guilt, personal responsibility, and the moral weight of violence now frames its antagonist as a Trump-adjacent strongman and its hero as a resistance figure operating outside a corrupt system. The craft is still strong. The politics have eaten the show.

#13: Mother Mary (2026)

WOKE MARGIN: -11 WOKE

Genre: Psychological Drama Thriller • Platform: Theatrical • Distributor: A24 • Stars: Anne Hathaway, Michaela Coel

A24 has made a David Lowery psychological thriller about two women who used to be everything to each other, the long silence that followed, and what happens when the pop star calls the costume designer back into her orbit before a comeback show that might define or destroy her. Anne Hathaway plays Mary. Michaela Coel plays Sam. Their reunion is not warm. It is a reckoning. And the word "psychosexual" in every press release is doing a lot of work. The filmmaking is genuinely good. Lowery is a skilled director and Hathaway delivers one of her best performances. The ideological architecture, however, treats traditional restraint, religious upbringing, and institutional loyalty as sources of repression from which the characters must liberate themselves.

#14: Stop! That! Train! (2026)

WOKE MARGIN: -11 WOKE

Genre: Action Comedy / Disaster / Parody • Platform: Theatrical • Director: Adam Shankman • Stars: RuPaul Charles, Ginger Minj, Jujubee, Sarah Michelle Gellar

Exactly what it says on the box: a disaster parody featuring drag queens, built for the RuPaul's Drag Race fan base. The structure is Airplane! on rails. Two train stewardesses, Tess and DeeDee, sneak onto a luxury train called the Glamazonian Express after losing their jobs. The train loses its brakes. It is heading for Florida and a nuclear facility. There is a storm called Stormaganza. The film's ideological profile comes not from any specific argument but from its complete embedding in drag culture, queer aesthetics, and the assumption that traditional gender presentation is inherently funny. The film is self-aware about what it is. It does not pretend to be anything else. For audiences inside its cultural lane, it works. For everyone else, there is no entry point.

#15: Is God Is (2026)

WOKE MARGIN: -10 WOKE

Genre: Thriller / Drama / Revenge • Platform: Theatrical • Director: Aleshea Harris • Stars: Kara Young, Mallori Johnson, Sterling K. Brown

One of the most explicitly ideological films of the year. Director Aleshea Harris has been clear about what she is making: a Black feminist revenge myth about women's violent agency against a patriarch who destroyed their family. The stylized character names -- the Monster, Ruby the God, the Rough One -- signal from the first frame that this is not realism. This is closer to Greek tragedy adapted for the American South. The premise: twin sisters Racine and Anaia were burned as children by their father. They carry those scars. Their mother Ruby is dying. Before she goes, she sends her daughters to kill the man who did this to them. The film's ideological stance is not subtext. It is the architecture, and Harris's commitment to that architecture is complete.

#16: Wuthering Heights (2026)

WOKE LEAN MARGIN: -9 WOKE

Genre: Gothic Romance / Drama • Platform: Theatrical • Director: Emerald Fennell • Stars: Margot Robbie, Jacob Elordi

Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights survived 179 years with its reputation intact. There is a real question worth asking about Emerald Fennell's adaptation: is she bringing out what is already in the text, or importing her own fixations into it? After 136 minutes, the answer is mostly the second one. The film frames Heathcliff's rage primarily through the lens of racial grievance, adding a dimension the novel does not center. Cathy's famous "I am Heathcliff" speech is reinterpreted as a cry of feminist liberation rather than a statement of cosmic intertwined identity. The adaptation is sumptuously shot and Robbie and Elordi are compelling. But Fennell, whose Saltburn and Promising Young Woman established her ideological signature, has reshaped a classic into a vessel for contemporary politics. The novel's moral complexity is flattened into a progressive revenge narrative.

#17: Enola Holmes 3 (2026)

WOKE LEAN MARGIN: -9 WOKE

Genre: Mystery / Adventure • Platform: Netflix • Director: Philip Barantini • Stars: Millie Bobby Brown, Louis Partridge, Henry Cavill

Enola Holmes 3 continues the franchise's pivot from charming Victorian detective romp into something heavier and more politically pointed. The film opens in Malta, where Enola and Tewkesbury have arrived for their wedding. Sherlock is there, openly against the marriage, worried his sister is throwing away her independence. Then he vanishes. What follows is a globe-trotting mystery that uncovers a decades-old conspiracy involving British officers who stole Afghan gold during the colonial wars and covered it up through a network of corrupt aristocrats and military brass. The villains are all men in uniform or titles. The revelation of colonial theft as the engine of British aristocratic wealth is the film's moral center. The franchise has traded charm for conviction, and parents who enjoyed the first two should know what the third is doing before pressing play.

#18: The Last of Us - Season 2 (2026)

WOKE LEAN MARGIN: -8 WOKE

Genre: Drama • Platform: HBO

Season 1 earned enormous trust through grounded storytelling and earned emotional beats. Season 2 leverages that trust to introduce ideological reframing that would not have survived scrutiny if presented upfront. The bait-and-switch is architecturally precise. What made the first season compelling -- moral complexity, survival-driven choices, earned relationships -- is gradually replaced by identity-driven narrative restructuring. The show has not abandoned its craft. It has merely redirected that craft toward a different set of priorities, and viewers who came for the survival story may find themselves consuming a political argument they did not sign up for.

#19: Forbidden Fruits (2026)

WOKE LEAN MARGIN: -7 WOKE

Genre: Comedy Horror • Platform: Theatrical • Writer/Director: Meredith Alloway • Producer: Diablo Cody

There is a store at the Highland Place mall called Free Eden. It sells cupcake-scented candles, charm bracelets, and overpriced cotton sundresses. The employees are gorgeous. They have their own slang. They only text boys using emojis. And at some point after closing time, they gather in a candlelit upper room called Paradise and perform rituals in service of what may or may not be actual witchcraft. Produced by Diablo Cody, Forbidden Fruits operates as a neon-soaked satirical horror-comedy about performative feminism and the commodification of female empowerment. The film critiques the cult of girlboss culture while simultaneously glamorizing it. It earns its woke score through embedding rather than preaching, which is what makes it a woke lean rather than a blunt instrument.

#20: Butterfly Dreams (2026)

WOKE LEAN MARGIN: -7 WOKE

Genre: Coming-of-Age Drama • Platform: Theatrical • Director: Dee Rees

Director Dee Rees brings formidable craft and genuine humanity to this coming-of-age drama about a sixteen-year-old trans girl who leaves her conservative religious hometown in rural Kentucky to live with her estranged grandmother and attend an inclusive arts high school. The cinematography is warm and intimate. The score is delicate and moving. The performances are uniformly excellent. The film's core argument -- that parental concern about a child's gender transition is inherently harmful, that religious belief systems are sources of oppression, and that affirming a child's gender identity is the highest form of love -- is not presented as one perspective among many. It is presented as moral truth. For VirtueVigil's audience, Butterfly Dreams is an ideological challenge presented with skill and sincerity.

Methodology: VirtueVigil's VVWS dual-scoring system independently measures traditional values content (sacrifice, duty, family, faith, patriotism, earned heroism) and progressive ideological content (identity politics, systemic grievance, deconstruction of traditional institutions, subversion of established roles) on separate 0-50 scales. The margin between them determines the verdict. These are not quality scores. A film can score high on traditional values and be poorly made. A film can score high on woke content and be technically brilliant. The score reflects what a film believes, not whether it is good.
