Busboys

Our Verdict on Busboys

There is a question that has been circulating in every corner of the comedy-fan internet since the Busboys trailer dropped: is it woke?

The short answer is no. The longer answer is what VirtueVigil is for.

Busboys arrives April 17, 2026, directed by Jonah Feingold and starring David Spade and Theo Von as the leads, with Tim Dillon and Bobby Lee in supporting roles. It was financed by Spade and Von themselves, outside the studio system. The premise is this: two idiots believe that if they become waiters, all of their problems will be solved. They spot a busboys-wanted sign outside a restaurant. Chaos ensues.

That setup sounds simple. It is. That is the point.

David Spade has been making comedies about lovable losers for thirty years. Tommy Boy. Black Sheep. Joe Dirt. The connective tissue across all of them is a comic persona built on sarcasm, irreverence, and a fundamental contempt for pretension. Spade does not make movies with messages. He makes movies with jokes. His delivery is sharp and his targets are universal: stupidity, vanity, and the gap between how things are supposed to work and how they actually do. In 2026, that instinct is rarer and more valuable than it sounds.

Theo Von is the other half of this equation, and he brings a completely different energy. Von is a Louisiana native whose comedy comes from personal vulnerability, Southern gothic weirdness, and genuine human warmth. His podcast has built one of the most loyal audiences in the medium precisely because he does not perform a persona. He is exactly what he appears to be: odd, funny, sincere, and utterly uninterested in contemporary cultural performance. Put Spade's sharp detachment next to Von's chaotic sincerity and you have a natural comic friction that almost any premise can exploit.

The restaurant setting is not accidental. The service industry is one of the last settings in American life where competence is the only currency that matters and nobody cares about your politics. A busboy is judged on whether the tables are cleared, not on whether his values are correctly calibrated. That environment is inherently anti-woke by its own internal logic: the real world does not grade on effort or ideology. It grades on results. Two idiots attempting to navigate that environment is a perfect comic premise for comedians who built their careers in the meritocratic comedy club circuit, where audiences go home if you are not funny.

Tim Dillon and Bobby Lee in supporting roles is not background casting. Dillon is one of the most vocally anti-establishment comedians working today. His public persona is organized around contempt for media consensus and institutional groupthink. Bobby Lee is one of the most beloved figures in the broader comedy community, a performer who generates warmth and genuine absurdity without a political agenda in sight. Adding these two to a Spade and Von vehicle does not change the film's trajectory. It amplifies the DNA that was already there.

Director Jonah Feingold made his name with Dating and New York (2021), a sharp romantic comedy with strong dialogue and a clear affection for the genre's classic forms. Feingold is not an ideological filmmaker. He is a comedy craftsman who writes to his cast. The Busboys premise is calibrated to the specific strengths of the four performers he is working with, which is the sign of a director who respects his material and trusts his talent.

The production context is the clearest signal of all. Spade and Von financed this film themselves. That means no studio diversity consultant reviewed the script. No corporate greenlight committee demanded representation metrics. No marketing team calculated the film's progressive credentials before approving the budget. The film exists because two comedians with their own money decided to make it. That is as clean a production origin story as VirtueVigil will ever score.

For our readers who want the bottom line: Busboys scores TRADITIONAL with a +17.99 TRAD margin and a 0.35 wokeScore. That 0.35 is the idiot-male-leads framing, which is the least threatening woke signal in the database. Every structural element of this production points away from ideological content and toward old-school buddy comedy executed by people who are very good at it.

Go see it.
