Our Verdict on The Whale

Brendan Fraser won the Academy Award for Best Actor for this role. He deserved it. That does not make The Whale an easy film to watch, and it does not make it a film that conservative audiences will embrace without reservation. Darren Aronofsky has made another piece of devastating, precise craftsmanship about self-destruction, and like most of his films, the values conversation is genuinely complex.

The setup: Charlie is a 600-pound man who has not left his apartment in years. He teaches online writing classes with his camera off. He eats compulsively. He is dying. He knows it. He is also, at his core, a deeply good man trying to make one thing right before he goes: reconnect with Ellie, the teenage daughter he abandoned eight years ago when he left his wife and family for a relationship with Alan, a male student. Alan is dead. Charlie is destroying himself in grief. He has perhaps a week left.

This is A24 filmmaking in its most uncompromising form. The film is adapted from Samuel D. Hunter's 2012 stage play and retains the claustrophobic unity of that form. Almost everything takes place in Charlie's apartment. The camera circles the same small spaces obsessively. The world outside barely exists. Those people: Liz (Hong Chau), his nurse and oldest friend, who is furious at him for dying and will not stop showing up anyway. Thomas (Ty Simpkins), a young missionary from the New Life church who arrives looking for a convert and finds something he did not expect. The film's emotional architecture is built on truth-telling. Charlie is obsessed with authentic writing. He tells his students to write something true, not something that sounds good. The best writing in Hunter's screenplay involves Charlie's relationship to this idea of truth and what it actually costs to live it.

Fraser's physical performance is extraordinary. The prosthetics are extensive and the commitment to inhabiting them is total. But what makes the performance great is not the physical transformation. It is the quality of emotional transparency. This is a man with no defenses left. He spent years behind a camera that is always off, eating himself to death in private. When people are in the room with him, he cannot maintain a mask. Everything he feels is visible. Fraser plays this with complete honesty and it is wrenching.

The redemption arc is genuine: by the end, Ellie's wall cracks, and what is underneath is not hatred but grief. She needed her father and did not have him. He recognizes that now. He gives her recognition before he dies. That is the traditional content and it is powerful.

The final sequence is deliberately ambiguous but unmistakably spiritual. Charlie rises to his feet for the first time. The light through the windows intensifies in a way that is not naturalistic. Ellie reads her essay. He moves toward her and toward the light. Whether this is death, transcendence, or both is the film's final open question. The imagery is Christian in resonance: a suffering man received into light after trying to make things right.

The woke signals: Charlie's identity as a gay man is not incidental to the story. His relationship with Alan is the reason for everything.
