Zack Snyder's Justice League does not qualify as a woke trap under VVWS v1.1. The film carries a +17.72 TRAD margin and a TRADITIONAL verdict. Its woke-adjacent signals are visible from early in the film: Wonder Woman's combat superiority, Cyborg's backstory involving dehumanization by a Silas Stone figure who prioritized science over his son's consent. None of this is concealed past the 50% mark. The film's overwhelming traditional architecture, messianic resurrection, brotherhood of protectors, masculine redemption, and good triumphing over absolute evil, is present and consistent from first frame to last. No trap. Just a very long, very traditional film with a few genre-standard diversity signals.

Four hours. That is what Zack Snyder needed to tell this story properly, and for once in the history of the superhero blockbuster, a studio let a director find out if he was right.
He was right.
Zack Snyder's Justice League is the most complete argument for what the DCEU could have been, assembled from Snyder's original footage after his departure from the theatrical cut following his daughter's death in 2017. It is, among other things, a film shaped by grief, and you can feel that in its relationship to resurrection. Superman comes back. The word that keeps appearing in the film is 'unity.' Unity of purpose. Unity of power. Unity of sacrifice.
The film has six heroes and gives each of them something real to do. That is its first achievement. The theatrical Whedon cut, 119 minutes long and operating under instructions to be lighter and faster, gutted Cyborg's arc almost entirely and reduced several characters to cameos. The Snyder Cut restores all of it. What you get is a film where each character's reasons for being there matter to the story.
Bruce Wayne's arc is redemption. He believed in nothing after Superman's death. He spent the gap between films constructing a team not because he believed they would win but because he believed they had to try. His faith in people is rebuilt over four hours. By the end he is the man who charges into battle against a god-level threat because someone has to go first, and he has decided to be that someone. Ben Affleck has never been better.
Victor Stone / Cyborg is the heart of the film. Snyder said this explicitly and it is true. Victor is a young man who was dying in a car crash and whose father used a Mother Box, alien technology, to rebuild him without his consent. He survived. He resents surviving. He lives in isolation, monitoring financial systems, occasionally moving money to people who need it, doing good anonymously from behind a wall of rejection. His journey in this film is the same journey as Clark Kent's in Man of Steel: accepting what you are and deciding to use it in service of others rather than hiding it out of shame. Ray Fisher plays this with restraint and genuine sadness. It is the best acting in the film.
Superman's resurrection is the sequence most divisive among viewers. When Clark comes back, he comes back wrong. Black suit, red eyes briefly appearing, no memory, no restraint. Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, and The Flash fight him in what might be the most genuinely frightening superhero fight ever filmed, because one side does not want to hurt the other and the other side is not holding back. It resolves through Lois Lane, which is either the most dramatically efficient solution or the laziest one depending on your patience. I find it efficient. The woman who understands his humanity is the only thing that can reach his humanity when his mind has gone dark. That is not lazy. That is internally consistent.
Steppenwolf is not a great villain. He is a tool of Darkseid rather than an independent threat, and the film is honest about this: everything Steppenwolf does is in service of reclaiming his place at Darkseid's side after a previous failure. He has no ideology beyond conquest and no inner life beyond fear of his master. As an antagonist this makes him structurally useful, because the fight against him is really a fight against what he represents: the ancient evil that has been trying to absorb Earth's identity into itself since the age of gods and men. Snyder's real villain is Darkseid, seen briefly and left for unmade sequels. That the sequels were never made is the primary artistic failing attached to this film from the outside.
The epilogue Knightmare sequence is the film's structural weakness. It introduces Jared Leto's Joker, shows a world where Superman has fallen to Darkseid's Anti-Life Equation, and features appearances by Mera, Deathstroke, and others in a dark future Batman is trying to prevent. It is compelling as a teaser. As an ending to a four-hour film that already ended fifteen minutes earlier, it asks more of the viewer than the film has earned. Whether you find it exciting or frustrating depends on how much you trusted that the sequels were coming.
They were not. This is all there is. Given that: it is enough.
