The film opens with the Rebels on the run. The victory of A New Hope bought them nothing but time. The Empire found them, sent an invasion force, and nearly wiped them out before the heroes escaped in separate directions. Luke goes to Dagobah to train with Yoda. Han, Leia, Chewbacca, and C-3PO flee to Cloud City in the Millennium Falcon. Both threads end badly. Luke leaves before his training is complete and loses. Han is betrayed, tortured, and frozen. By the time the credits roll, the heroes are scattered and diminished.
This is a film about what it costs to grow up.
Yoda is the center of gravity in Empire. A creature 900 years old, living in a swamp on a forgotten world, who does not look like anyone's idea of a great warrior. That's the point. That's a classical moral proposition and a deeply traditional one.
Han and Leia's storyline gives the film its emotional warmth. Their banter is genuinely funny. The romance that develops under pressure feels earned. When Han is taken, the loss is real because the relationship is real. The famous 'I love you / I know' exchange works because Ford and Fisher played the entire film as two people who wouldn't admit how much they cared. The admission at the moment of separation costs exactly what it should.
Irvin Kershner directed Empire with a seriousness Lucas's original didn't quite reach. He let scenes breathe. He trusted performance.
