Our Verdict on Spirited Away
Spirited Away is Hayao Miyazaki's Oscar-winning masterpiece about a ten-year-old girl who must work in a spirit-world bathhouse to save her parents from being served as the main course. The film is widely considered one of the greatest animated features ever made, and a VVWS assessment confirms what its reputation suggests: this is a deeply traditional work dressed in fantastical clothing. Miyazaki built a moral universe where work is dignity, care is power, and gratitude is the fundamental human posture.

Adult Viewer Insight
Miyazaki's genius is that he makes films for children that adults need. Spirited Away is about the terror and liberation of growing up -- of realizing your parents cannot protect you, that the world is full of spirits and monsters who do not care about your feelings, and that the only way through is to work, to care, and to remember who you are. The bathhouse is a metaphor for the adult world of labor, transaction, and hierarchy, and Chihiro's journey from frightened child to competent worker mirrors every adult's first job. But Miyazaki's moral vision is distinctly traditional: Chihiro wins not by smashing the system but by navigating it with integrity, not by rejecting authority but by earning the respect of those in authority. When she leaves the spirit world, she is the same girl -- but she has done the work, and that is what has changed her. No magic wand. No chosen-one destiny. Just effort, courage, and love.
Parental Guidance
Rated PG for some scary moments and thematic elements. The pig transformation scene is disturbing for young children. No-Face's rampage includes threatening behavior and consumption of characters. The spirit world is populated by creatures that range from whimsical (soot sprites) to genuinely frightening (Yubaba, the giant baby). No sexual content. No profanity in the English dub. The moral framework is positive: Chihiro succeeds through hard work, loyalty, and compassion. Recommended for ages 8 and up. The film rewards family co-viewing and provides rich material for discussing courage, greed, identity, and the value of work. The two-hour runtime is long for younger viewers but the pacing is masterful.
